the popes one is not! it is a sign of the sacrifice that jesus "made" for mankind..that is the belief in which it is held by the current catholic church..
what it ment in the fitfh century has no bearing on its meaning today..
its an old pagan symbol..well the cross is..it was used as sign of death due to people been crucified on it..ie,jesus dies on the cross..but alot of christian symbols are adopted from pagan religions...
look if people want to find a reason to see bad in something they will and the very same for seeing good...so symboligy is a personal interpretation.
personally the whole jesus and bible stuff dont fit for me, thats not to say i think there is no god,but maybe not as the way we "where" thought to believe he was..
religion is of great comfort to people, and for that reason i see it as a good thing....but unfortunetly i have yet to be blessed with faith.,.
