Digital Chemistry

Your words want
a warm, sensitive, caring,
romantic, intelligent woman
not afraid to love
and show that love to you.

Your words seek
someone just like you
who is seeking someone like you
who is seeking someone like me.
Yet, you want a tingle
of eye meeting eye,
of flesh touching flesh,
just the right shape,
textures and scent.

Wolves know.
Doves know.
Even molecules know
that pheromones
are not found in pixels,
in pictures the size of
postage stamps.
Desire is not displayed
in digital dialogues.

You can point and click,
but you cannot download my dreams.
To reach my heart
you do not need a password,
you do not need to log into my life story.

Shall we take a chance in cyberspace,
bridge the electronic void,
whisper secrets over hazelnut cappuccino,
reach out, gently touch each other’s hand,
see if fireworks fly between our fingertips,
sense a spark, a tiny tingle of
chemistry?

About this poem:
I was fed up and angry with online dating. With men looking at my photo and telling me they didn't feel "chemistry" and they hadn't even met me yet. This was actually a response to someone, but I decided not to send it. Subsequently it won an award in a local poetry contest. Fast forward many years, I'm still single, and still fed up with online dating.
