How The Light Reflects

Play it just that way son
Said the old man with a smile
'Cause when you play it sad and sweet
It feels alright for awhile

And the stained glass of his eyes
Was like a worn out movie screen
With screenplays of lost promises
False hearts, and broken dreams

(ch)
He said; I've searched the world for answers
But I haven't found them yet
It's never quite the way it seems
It's how the light reflects

In the angry city evenings
One can vaguely hear the cries
Of the children born in hunger
And the anger borne in lies

And the night holds desperate promise
But it wants to shred your soul
If you stare into those lights too long
You know you'll lose control

(ch)
You try to put the past behind you
But you never quite forget
It's not the game that draws the crowd
It's how the light reflects

So I sit here on the beach
An old guitar in weathered hands
And think about the days I used to
Wander through this land

And the ripples on the sea
Reflects the light of a billion stars
While the memories that I run from
Start to gather around my heart

(ch)
Oh, I thought I'd lost so much there
As I paid my last respects
But it's not the pain that wounds the heart
It's how the light reflects

About this poem:
A semi-autobiographical meditation on how our perception largely shapes our reality.

La De Da

Well you can't take a dreamer
Away from the stars
Sometimes I think I'd fly
One way to Mars

If I just had a reason
As good as the view
In the world of my dreams
When I'm dreaming of you

La de da…

Oh, you know I give thanks
For each moment you gave
Not for whole worlds would I
One memory trade

So now carry on bright star
Remember me some way
Where the wild wolves run
I will sing for you someday

For The Love Of High Places

For the love of high places
Like it says in the book
From the very first dawn
We have climbed up to look

Where the bushes once burned
And the bold eagle flies
Where the prophets once spoke
And the earth meets the sky

From the summits we earn
We can see far and wide
And then, if we dare
We can see deep inside

In the grand Himalaya
Brave men battle for breath
While the frozen winds blow
Through those castles of death

We will always look up
When we sing our best graces
And we all live our best
For the love of high places

About this poem:
If you don't think that there is something magical, even spiritual, about mountains, then you need to go visit one!

The Holy Warrior

Like unto him, the preacher said
I heard a whisper, turned my head
And listened to a distant song
A piper at the gates of dawn

So savage is the rising sun
That stills the lonely piper's song
And forces wide the tortured eyes
The witnesses where all things die

And onward Christian soldiers surge
So many heathen souls to purge
Who churn to dust their neighbor's sod
And claim it in the name of God

While through the night the fires burn
The tables that will never turn
The innocents, now driven out
Will harvest all those seeds of doubt

The holy warrior kneels in prayer
With crimson stains in matted hair
He begs the night to take his fears
And bury them in brighter years

About this poem:
It started out as a thought on the destruction and death in the former Yugoslav republics and then just sort of wandered! By the way, if you caught the Pink Floyd reference, then you are REALLY OLD!!! ;) Yeah, I know, me too.

Friend

It's been some time since I've seen you smile, but then
I've hardly seen you at all
Are you still doing that same old dance
In that fatal new age ball?

If you could see out your window tonight, you could
See a billion stars
Tell me does anything shine for you
In that distant place you are

(chorus)
I never thought I would see you here
Of all of the places we've been
Oh, how I miss you
Friend

I remember our high school days, and that
Crazy way you laughed
Now you just stare off into space
Are you ever coming back?

(chorus)
All the girls were so crazy for you
And you were so crazy for them
Oh how I miss you
Friend

(bridge)
The road was hard, it was long sometimes
Nobody said it was easy
So you took a little something
To ease the pain
And now you've drifted so far away
Can you even hear me?
Oh, it felt so good not to hurt anymore
You took it again and again and again

I hear the wind on the window pane, and my
Voice is running low
I just don't know how to reach you
And I don't know what to say anymore

(chorus)
Visiting hours are over now
And I don't know if I'll see you again
Oh how I'll miss you
Friend

Oh how I'll miss you
Friend

About this poem:
This is a song lyric that I wrote about visiting my best friend in the hospital after he had taken a massive overdose of hallucinagenics and other drugs and regressed to a catatonic state. After years of hospitalization and therapy, he was finally released, where he commited suicide. The devastation wrought by drugs is so widespread and so deeply felt.
