I grew up very near route 66 which, in san bernadino county california, it is called the foothill freeway. there are parts of old 66 that now sit unused and run parallel to what is now the 15 freeway that goes from the coast of california and heads east. I am not sure where it ends at but it does go as far as Law Vegas.
there are still several road side attractions that base their tourism on route 66. you can find old diners like the ones you can see in old movies about the hiway. they spend a lot of money to keep them looking the way they did back in the 40's and 50's.
I think it was some adventuresome souls that took the journey across that hiways back in those days. anymore, you don't travel far at all before coming to a rest area or food establishment or any of the other things we take for granted on a road trip. back then, you best be carrying the things you need with you as it was hours or even days between areas with folks that could help.
