Swedish Gate is the only one's of the eight gates, which remained about defensive at present days. Gates were built in the 1698th They were out of town the defensive. Like as other gates in Riga, it was opened at sunrise, and closed at sunset.other legend says, that the name comes in honor of the Swedish heroism during the Northern War. The Russians took a number of important strongholds, and 1710th was subjected to Riga - only plague and famine led the Swedes to give up. Peter the 1st, himself as soldier, assessed the Swedish heroism and left soldiers alive. They left the city throught the Swedish Gate, from the resulting name.

....Sorry Fiona,...The "Stranger in the Night"...was well-respected Labour Party politician...Donald Dewar(21Aug.1937--11Oct.2000) He stands looking down Buchanan Street.Its very steep,and you can stand at the top here and look right down to the heart of the city.........
