President-elect Donald Trump warned in an interview that the U.S. will impose a border tax on cars that BMW plans to build at a new plant in Mexico and export to the U.S. market.
BERLIN, Jan 15 (Reuters) - President-elect Donald Trump has warned the United States will impose a border tax of 35 percent on cars that German carmaker BMW plans to build at a new plant in Mexico and export to the U.S. market.

Trump was speaking in an interview with German newspaper Bild, which on Sunday released excerpts of his comments translated into German.

A BMW spokeswoman said a BMW Group plant in San Luis Potosi would build the BMW 3 Series starting from 2019, with the output intended for the world market. The plant in Mexico would be an addition to existing 3 Series production facilities in Germany and China.

Trump said BMW should build its new car factory in the United States because this would be “much better” for the company.

He went on to say Germany was a great car producer, borne out by Mercedes Benz cars being a frequent sight in New York, but there was no reciprocity.

Germans were not buying Chevrolets at the same rate, he said, making the business relationship an unfair one-way street. He said he was an advocate of free trade, but not at any cost.

The BMW spokeswoman said the company was “very much at home in the U.S.,” employing directly and indirectly nearly 70,000 people in the country.

SistaCallie, I get the feeling that you don't like Donald Trump. I'm no big fan of most politicians. Trump hasn't even taken the oath of office yet. I don't get the animosity.

Trump is just making noise (smoke curtain) and the car companies are playing along, they will create "some" jobs in USA and they will continue making investments and creating (blue-collar jobs) in other countries.

Will "those jobs" have a positive impact on the national un-employment rate?

"..US unemployment rate rose to 4.7 percent in December 2016 from a nine-year low of 4.6 percent in the previous month and in line with market expectations. The number of unemployed persons was almost unchanged at 7.5 million while the labor force participation rate increased by 0.1 percentage point to 62.7 percent. Unemployment Rate in the United States averaged 5.81 percent from 1948 until 2016, reaching an all time high of 10.80 percent in November of 1982 and a record low of 2.50 percent in May of 1953."

I find it interesting that in the early 80's the interest rate was close to 20%. I'm wondering if there's a connection between high unemployment and high interest rates? That was right around the time the Fed started printing money like it was toilet paper.

Yes there is a connection , it was called " disciplining the workforce " . I was used to stop the continuing strikes . It soon destroyed company's which had a disruptive workforce . Unfortunately it has given rise to two generations of familys who don't know what work is .

Are you taking about the speculative markets? because someone is doing the job, generating wealth with their sweat, their talent, risking their capital, investing in business that generate wealth (being potato chips or computer chips).

Pretty much , 1986 the worst of the changes caused by high interest rates started . Commys had control of our unions which was broken in the main apart from the education system , I guess you can't just close schools aye , like you can a freezing works . Education system is facing change now with the growth of charter schools not needing registered teachers undermining good little commies ones hold over the education of our children . Many good business were broken by high interest rates reaching well over 30% here , more if you went over the top of your seasonal finance . I went through it running my own farm .

The new right is the same right that was running the world before the thirtys crash . Fec enm all , twice .

Commys?
why is it that conservative people can not write the whole word? are they afraid?

Communist?
like Putin?

laugh

Education system is facing change now with the growth of charter schools not needing registered teachers undermining good little commies ones hold over the education of our children .

Education of children is given at home, teaching is given at the schools.
Your children are a reflection of your educating them (or not).

We had a serious financial crash called "the Tequila effect" and we got up to 120 % interest rate for some time, it was tough.

The new right is the same right that was running the world before the thirtys crash .
The ones that run the world are not right and neither left, they do support candidates from both parties and once they are elected they do business with either, left, right, central..name it and there is not Santa Claus either.

Fec enm all , twice .
It is the other way around laugh

@life , yeah real commies , doubt Putin considers himself one . If interest rates ever got near 10% the kids with debt would learn a real lesson , such is the level of debt . Our housing market , one of the most expensive in the world , would "correct" itself bigtime . A thump which is coming .
