I'm on my own unless I get in the car and visit some friends about an hour's drive away, and I haven't decided yet. I had no internet the past couple of days but now it's working again, so have been reading lots of mail.
To all the nice people who sent me good wishes, I want to say thanks. I really appreciate your good wishes and wish everyone a

A Very Good Christmas Morning to you Carol girlwave

You have the best companion of all, innit!!

Your beloved friendly dog.dancing dog

Just give him a chewy juicy bone with a red bow and cook a nice piece of steak for both. Then go for a nice long walk in the country and afterwards make yourself a good drink, put your feet up and watch your favourite dvd.

How about that huh?? teddybear hug

Well, I don't think that I am the worse experience that man can have because, unfortunately there are even worse but I will tell you my experience for the last Two decades:
- Well as you know, in 1991 here in Croatia was war. Between us and Serbs. As Croats are Catholic and Serbs are Orthodox , so due
to this, there are differences in calendar that brings to that that we celebrate Christmas like all Catholic and they by the old calendar. So, on to days day, in 1991 on a position of my brigade felt more than 3.000 shells from mortars, canons, howitzers and MLRS in two hours counted, from 23,00 to 01,00.
They promised to us that they will send to us their best wishes for Christmas from all barrels which they had and they did it.
So , in this manner, they congratulated to us a New 1992.
We didn't responded with fire. Not on a Christmas, not for a New year. We were sitting in our shelters, waiting if somebody abroad will remember that he is also only human bean. And we suffer casualties. But, command was: not to turn back.
I asked them on Motorola: Why are you doing this now?
They responded to me that they are sending to us a Christmas greetings in the same way that we shall send them for their Christmas.
I told them that there is no way that any of us shoot on any of them for their Christmas.
They smiled.
Than came their Christmas. We sand them a massage by radio that there will be a seas of fire from our side two days, and that we shall organize some kind of fire work at midnight, to celebrate their Christmas together with them.. Five minutes before the midnight we called their Staff and we announced to them that we shall start our firework exactly at midnight and that they are invited to be our guests.
And so we started.
From all mortars and howitzers we fired in the air mines and shells with torches on parachutes.
On a front line of 60-y km we made from night a day. Five minutes day but a day.
That is my greatest spending of Xmas day.
After that I have spent last 15 Xmas days alone. But this is due to my decision. So, I don't ask: why or do I have to spent it like this? Each decision has its good and bad sides and so, when you make it, you must be aware that you will have to fight also with bad consequences
You are not the only one, but you had to think why is that so?
If you don't like, try something to change it.
I'll think about it next year.
To you, and all folks: Merr5y Christmas and a happy New Year.

cheers

Hi Steevyv,

Thank you for reminding me, how lucky we are to live in a peaceful Europe, if not at peace with the rest of the world……
I live in an area with has been THE battle field during WW1 and WW2 (Dunkirk 1939) and 1944.
Any direction should I drive, I go past dozens of war cemeteries.
Young men coming from as far as Australia, Canada, USA and of course from the UK are buried for ever in this part of France.
We commemorate their sacrifice every November 11th and May 8th, still civilians casualties are hardly mentioned.
There are numerous branches of my genealogic tree, which just simply stop between 1914 and 1918 and again between 1939 and 1944.
That includes women, children and even new born babies who I would have known otherwise.
Members of my family who would be, for some of them, between 65 and 75 today, not so old people, as you see.
Complete villages, houses which had been family houses for ages disappeared (mostly during WWI ), even some of my ancestors grave could not been found as the grave yard had simply vanished.

Getting back to your personal experience, how surprising it is to find out that on both side of the front line, people sending shells at each other could communicate through the radio.

Now Xmas is over, I have unwrapped gifts that were sitting by my midget Xmas tree, the phone keeps ringing, and I am likely to spend most of the afternoon on the phone.
Next year, well, lets be pragmatic and say : « Wait and See ».
Best wishes to you, and to all.

Dead easy Madame,

See Dover (white Dover cliffs, that should ring a bellwink )
Try to swim in staight line as much as you can, within 4 to 6 hours, there you are, you are in Calais.
Alternatively you may board in a ferry (preferably when SeaFrance is not on strike)
If not claustrophobic have go with the Shuttle (Eurotunnel), only a 20 minutes subsea journey...
When should I get tea (proper English tea laugh ) ready ?comfort

I tried all of those, and I ended up in Le Touquet, playing golf, getting pissed, and being removed, physically from a club called the Blue Parrot.

If you like, but I do not drink tea...
