To cap it all

Having met up with my sister one particular morning a few years back we decided to go for a coffee, have a bit of a natter and catch up on things. As the day was really lovely and sunny We went to one of those places were you could sit outdoors. Two elderly gentlemen were seated nearby deep in conversation. One of them was a fairly well known character from the area. A blind man as it happens. His guide dog lay quietly at his feet. The other man eventually stands up, shakes his friend's hand, wishes him well and to promise to meet up again soon. He then walks off. At this stage the blind man rouses his guide dog and heads off in the opposite direction. It's at this point I spot a cap left on the chair. Being a kind-hearted soul I pick up the cap and go in pursuit of the blind man, calling his name as I go. Although a man with visual impairments he was well able to cover distance and it took me a while to catch up, panting and breathless. "You forgot your cap" I explained. At this he shot me a warm smile and said, "Oh, I'm sorry. You are mistaken. I don't wear a cap". He turned and walked off. Arriving back to the little coffee shop I find my sister in fits of laughter. She then explained how a very irate elderly gentleman came out of the shop with a second cup of coffee in his hand shouting how the world was going to Hell in a hand basket as a man couldn't even leave his cap on his chair unattended for 2 minutes without some thieving b*****d stealing it. He had then stormed off. Sheepishly I returned the cap to the chair and then left. I was reminded of this episode as I saw the same two elderly gentlemen again today walking along the promenade, one of them desperately clutching his cap to his head as I neared. In my defence there is a strong wind blowing on the sea front today.
