How I Became a Christian

My journey to faith began when I first decided one day to pick up and read an old dusty red Bible that belonged to my mother. I was still living with my mother at the time (early twenties) and am convinced that it was not by chance, that I would discover something in the Bible that would forever change my life. As I began to read, I started with the very first words..."In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). As I continued to read further, I began to notice that it would take me forever to read the whole Bible from cover to cover. This was frustrating for me, since I wanted to get to the main point of it's message (how to get to heaven)?

To many people's surprise, I was not brought up in a Christian home, nor do I remember ever going to church. My mother's side of the family was Catholic, though she herself, did not really believe in it. Certainly I did not find any motivation towards spiritual things, being raised in a non-Christian home.

As a single parent, my mother did the best she can in bringing me up, for where would I be without her? However, little did she know that God would later, use me, as an instrument, in which she would give her life to Jesus Christ.

As I continued to read the Bible, I decided to skip ahead, and go straight to the last chapter of the Bible. (the book of Revelation). Yes, I know, reading was not my favorite pastime, back in those days Lol.grin However, my desire to know the truth moved me, in examining one of life's biggest questions, regarding one's ultimate destiny. Starting at Revelation 22:7, I read in red letters the words of Christ...Behold I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of this prophecy in this book. Again, He says... Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done (Rev. 22:12). Then the last two verses of the Bible reads...He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come Lord Jesus (Rev. 22:20-21).

As I gleam the book of Revelation I began to notice, that from beginning to end, the coming of Christ is mentioned repeatedly. I figured if it was mentioned once it still would be important, but to mention it numerous times had to be something really important! I reasoned in my mind, if I missed him at his first coming, perhaps I can see Him at his second coming? Maybe He can take me to heaven, since he is pure and sinless and I am not?

As I pondered these thoughts, weeks later I overheard a debate while working at a nearby bakery. It was a debate between a Christian and an Atheist. It was loud enough to get my attention!laugh Though I was not a Christian at the time, I thought it seemed more reasonable to believe that there was a God, since the Christian had evidence to support what he was saying, while the Atheist was basing his belief on mere opinion, rooted solely on feelings. Towards the end of the exchange, I approached the Christian and asked him a question, regarding the second coming of Jesus.

He immediately answered my question. Then he took me to his locker, and gave me a small New Testament study Bible and wrote his name and phone number inside the Bible, and said if I have anymore questions I can give him a call. I took him at his word, and gave him a call, and it was then that he asked me a question! He asked me if I wanted to know for sure that I can go to heaven apart from any good works? I did not hesitate in my response, for I knew this was the grace of God upon me, for it sounded just like God to offer His love unconditionally. For who can earn their way into heaven through their own righteousness, when we are "already" guilty of sin (Rom. 3:23).

Over the phone my Christian friend showed me passages in Scripture that demonstrated that I was a sinner in need of God's saving grace. It was on the phone that my friend led me in a prayer to receive Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. yay

A year later, I was baptized. How good is that?applause

Now that I have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, my life is eternally secure. And that's what gives me the peace and joy which the world can never take away. Since I have been touched by God's love, I can share love with others. That includes even my enemies.peace Thank you Jesus!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

Thanks for sharing your brief testimony of what the power of God has done in your life. As a Christian, I can see that God has brought you from a mighty long way. Praise God for His amazing grace!

In regards, idolatry...To bow down and pray in front of statues is a act of worship, inspite what Roman Catholics say. With their mouth, they deny that they are worshiping idols, but in practice, that's exactly what they are doing. Obviously contradictory.

In Exodus 20:4...God condemned using objects as a religious act of devotion (worship). For prayer is an act of worship, and only God is to be worshiped (Exodus 20:3; Matthew 4:10). Therefore, praying to anyone other than God is wrong. Nowhere in the Bible are there prayers directed to Mary, Joseph, Peter, or any other saint.

Secondly, Roman Catholism does not emphasize the need to trust in Christ alone as your personal Savoir. For the Bible clearly, emphasize this, (John 3:3: Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:4).

As you know from personal experience, religion does not have the power to change or save anyone. Only Christ can do that! As God he can reach to God and as man he can reach to man, and bring the two of them together.

Hallelujah! God bless you brother!peace

Thanks for stopping by. Perhaps, you should consider Christ not religion. For religion in itself, cannot change the heart, only God can do that. Even Jesus predicted that there would be those who have a said faith, but not a real faith (Matt. 7:21). Had I focused on people rather God, I would have missed the boat, in regards, to my salvation.

God bless you!

What I can say from my own experience is that I was open to the Bible. I had an open mind to reading it and God worked on my heart to bring me to that point in my life, that I would come to trust in Him. I encourage you to read the Bible with an open mind, for then you will discover what Peter said was true, concerning Christ..."Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68).

God bless!
hello all. scouse beer

Glatlol Thats some stormy weather were having uh oh watch out for the stray lightning bolts laugh

serendipity I agree the Bible has great wisdom and compassion but it loses me at revelations. All that stuff is just a misuse of peoples fears and conditioning. Its no more than a control mechanism If you ask me its a lame addition to Christs teachings by a few people trying to enforce what Jesus dedicated his life to Defeat. The assumption of control of the many by the few who wish only for power. Thats my take on The Bible !

Peace

PS nice story though. thanks for telling it thumbs up
I have read the bible, I still have a beautiful gold Leatherbound copy in my house, I have read it to my children and will read it to my granchildren, they all know is is simply a book with some storys in it.

We fill in each new birth in it, and each marriage, christianing etc.
Serend I was a catholic when I read the bible, I believed what it said before I read it, so I was going to it with an open mind, then as I read the realisation came to me that it was all nonsense, to far fetched to actually be true, it was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders when I realised it was all lies and made no sense so I didnt have to even try live my life by what some fictitious story book said.

I never felt as happy as I realised I am responsible for my life and how I live it not some none existing god, I found it easier to relate to my children as I new I didnt have to carry on the lie that has been told to me over the years, worked out great for them they got extra study times when ohters where doing religious classes.
Loyalty, Respect and honour to youhandshake

I believe.
But I can name me a complete ignoramus.
I was born and raised in the Soviet Union.
Religion in those days not only blasphemed and was punishable by law and in accordance with the policy of the Communist Party.
I still do not understand how the church succeeded survive in those terrible times especially in the years of Stalin's.
In my family, as in others of God and of the church at the children did not speak.
A child could tell something to your friends or at school and this could end badly for parents.
But in my family to observe all the holidays...
And somehow my child's heart knew that it was good.
With these feelings I live all my life.
And I will never enter into a religious debate.
I have all that I need in order to not feel lonely
and not to get lost in the chaos of religious.

It's always a blessing to see you! Thanks for sharing some of your history, for I find it very interesting. Well said, fortinia! I may ask you some questions later on, in reference to what you have shared, for if we don't learn anything from history, we are condemned to repeat it's mistakes.
