"The Boy Who Had No Hair"

"The Boy Who Had No Hair"
Written by: TKHMB (me)
Inspired by my son, Brett

At the age of eight I didn't know much,
being as young as I was and such,

Going to school, also thinking of play
and the friends I get to see that day.

With little curious minds we did explore
in the quest to understand things more.

There was a day when a new kid came to class,
First time I saw him he was sitting on the grass.

None of us understood what we saw that day
for he had no hair and he shied away.

Some of the kids laughed and pointed at him too,
none understanding what the boy had been through.

Later I went home and told my mom about him,
she sat me down to talk, her faced looked grim.

She told me how he had lost his hair,
said "how hard it must be for a child to bear",

"The chemotherapy can help but it all depends,
imagine how hard it must be for him to make friends".

The next day at school I decided on a whim
that I would go and make friends with him.

He smiled at me and together we did play
all during the recesses we had that day.

When school was over, the playground I did roam,
waiting for Mom to pick me up and take me home.

I told her how I made friends with the boy who was new
She looked at me and said " I am so very proud of you"

With tears in her eyes she gave me a tug,
and then she squished me into big bear hug.

This is a true story based on one of my sons experiences when he was eight years old.

He really did come home asking about a boy who had no hair. He learned for the first time what Leukemia is and what it can do, about what chemotherapy is and how it effects people. I wanted him to put himself in that boys shoes and think about how it must feel to be him and have the other kids laugh at him like he saw that day at school. God bless his little heart, he made friends with him and was proud of himself. I felt like a lucky Mom to have such a compassionate son.
