Breaking the News

The captain called the drill Sargent over and said "We just received word that Pvt Smith's wife has died. Can you break the news to him gently?"

The drill Sargent has the men line up, then says "All married men that 1 step forward. Not so fast, Smith."

I read it in a Mad magazine when I was a kid.
