Before they numbered roads (first done in Wisconsin, as I recollect) they gave 'em catchy names...so folks would drive their horseless carriages along 'em. And spend money.
The Black & Yellow Trail ran from Chicago, thru Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota & Wyoming to the BLACK Hills & YELLOWstone National Park..."...the Mecca of the American toutist." Today, it's US Hwy. 14.
US 14 now has two designations. Rochester, Minnesota to DeSmet, South Dakota is designated "Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Highway" (the trail the Ingalls family actually travelled West) and Black & Yellow Trail West of DeSmet.
Yep.
Route 40 is also called the National Highway in Maryland. One of the first Westward trails.
