The female side will dictate the value of the bride based on what they think is best for her to start a life. Land, animals and money come into play. I was almost subject to this tradition but I thank my dad who's influence from my grand father who lived in Hawaii was very strong and therefore made me at liberty to choose what to do in life. I opted to go to college and didn't marry until I was thirty. By then I was a University professor and didn't have to be bought with the system.
It is not prevalent in my birth country anymore although in the far flung villages, it is still a custom and practice. And the bride will not marry for love. It is all fated by the family to decide.
Mine happens to come to a little over 6 figures
I am very lucky Snook. By the way until today, there is no divorce in my birth country. I am glad I am no longer a part of that system. I am very happy with what life offered me. As I made all the choices and continue to make those choices, well, until fascism wins in my country...I doubt but with the political temperament, it just might happen.

Google it and you will have a little idea of the history of the place that brought about the practice of dowry and marriage system. Very cultural thing and there is beauty in it but for a very liberated person, it is the exact opposite of having freedom to choose what you want and decide in life.

i walk away from home at the age of 17 because i was asked if the house wasnt big enough for me just because i went walking on the farm alone and no one was not even at work.

I Knew A Woman That!
