Hi just look up Irishfaminemuseum and Strokestown house. These websites have links to what you need.

It was not only the British who let the people starve, Wealty landowners who were irish took advantage to clear their land for more profitable Cattle and sheep and Wheat/Barley.

The only real aid came from Quakers and english businessmen and landowners who lived and worked in ireland. The created work to build roads and other things. Lots of Irish starved because they would not go into goverment run work houses but would do a days work for a meal and a roof over their head.

Guinness family were one of thoese who aided many during and after the famine.

Cork was a very Good (bad) example. Business men there forced the Mayor to throw people begging out of the city. These were not english business men.Curfews were put in place and boundries that still exist to this day are listed to keep the poor away from the triving city.

if you Look up Corkcity and Cork County Council websites Herritage links you will find info there. RTE radio did a program on the famine and contact RTE.ie they are very helpful to children doing projects.

Hope this helps

Well Joe I dont want to fall out with you but I think you'll find that the English landowners didnt do a lot to help but still demanded their rents and when the families couldnt come up with the rents they were evicted and their houses were burnt, as for Guinnesses, I saw the program on RTE and they didnt do a lot to help out the suffering,

fairydream: Hallo everybody

need some help for my daughter.
we live in Germany now and my daughter needs to write an essay about the "Great famine"(Which in our eyes was not really one.) and Irish early history.
But we can not find anything.
We have the opinion of Sinead O`Connor like she very well said in her song " Famine".

We need some Internet sites on Irish History.....to proof the point
But not only Irish ones
please help if you can

Thank you

fairydream

Hi,
to a point the famine was man made, because of factors such as british economic policys & reliance on a single crop to sustain the poorer sections of the population, personally i see it as genocide. For more information on early ireland try doing search's for "celtic ireland" & "gaelic ireland", wikipedia has some pretty acurite information about the culture of ireland up to 1600 a.d. i hope this helps.

wexlady41: Have you tried googling Irish Famine. A lot of different sites come up. Haven't gone ito them all but the ones I glanced at seemed ok.

Please do NOT let anyone tell you the famine didn't happen and be careful who you quote. Sinead O'Connors music can be good but her credibility can be questionable. She tends to argue for the sake of arguing..not necessarily because she is right.

i know this comes in late but i totally agree with youhandshake
