How can you turn it off? Or maybe see who wants to chat with you, before you click 'yes' on it?

Is it just me, or does anyone find the thought of accepting a conversation from a total stranger a bit unnerving...?!

Hi Pinkerbelle, if you go into your profile settings you can turn it to off - you have to click on the IM request button to see who is trying to contact you, bit of a pain when the box keeps bouncing up though. Hope this helps wave

If I click 'yes' on it and see who it is, am I obliged to talk to them? Do they know I've clicked 'yes' and then maybe decided I don't want too...?!

Would hate to offend anyone....

When it happens to me i usually respond by saying.. "Please would you leave a message in my mailbox, introduce yourself, and ask if i'd like to IM, thankyou!" grin

That's a good idea, I might do that. I think personally, I'd rather chat thru inbox first, then IM them if I know a bit about them.

Absolutely.. And if they offer their email adress straight away, don't be in a hurry to do likewise. Because it's more than likely to be a scammer!!wave

Ha haaa! Don't worry, am in no rush to give out my email/phone no etc!

Have never been on a site before that's had so many warnings about scammers though. Has there been lots on here then?

Unfortunately they are here in droves.
Many are spotted by the moderators and removed. Whilst others slip through the net.
I learned most of my lessons the hard way before joining this site. But these are ruthless and devious people.
That's why it pays to have friends and allies in the forums. So when in doubt there are always other opinions for guidance and encouragement.
Don't be discouraged, though.
There are plenty of good people here too! peace

Thanks for the warning, it takes a lot to discourage me though...wink I trust my instincts and they're usually right. I can be impulsive, but don't think I'm gullible.

I like it here and think I'm gonna stick around...banana
