Good or bad marketing? I was out walking earlier when i noticed the Samartians now have a sign at a known suicide spot at the Cork Docks.

I know we as a nation have historically preferred to hide suicides away, not least because up until recently it was a sin in the eyes of the Catholic Church and victims couldn't be buried on consecrated ground.

But I'm glad to say times have changed, with the church now encouraging its young people to seek help if they are feeling depressed or suicidal.

The HSE also run suicide awarness in schools. Do we really need these adverts at known sites?

That's probably true and most that decide to kill themselves would never ring the samaratans. But something should be there to try and make them rethink what they are going to do.

i don't think it should be there an advert isn't going to stop someone from ending things. i know if it was me the samaritans would be the last people i would be thinking of contacting.

i disagree- there are many different 'levels' of suicidal people IMO- those that are adamant they will do it, and will find any means possible to die/ those you cannot help- well maybe you can help them live until the next opportunity they get to kill themselves. I believe those people want to die regardless and to make them live is cruel- also those left behind, need feel no guilt, because they know there was NOTHING they could have done to save them

there are, however, sooo many people that are crying out for help and attention ( used to work in liver transplant, and saw too many people who took overdoses because they were upset about something, ususally minor... didn;t really want to die. just wanted to show everyone how much they were hurting....... some did just that, others did die after a few days from their OD even after they realised what they did was wrong, and wanted to liveblues )

I don't think that having posters in prominent places will put tourists off, more that it will make them respect the Irish people that they care enough about their fellow countrymen to try and save them. Plus- if you have kids, and one of those posters made YOUR child think, even for a short time, enough to save them, do you really care about tourism??? maybe i am a bad person, but i would see the country go down the tubes before i would prevent my child/family member committing suicidedunno

snuffles: it was our mum that didnt want us to tell people !
my brother left behind a very young 2 n half yr old child and an expectant wife, there was no note no inclination at all, my youngest brother found him then died himself 7 years later,
my mother dedicated her life to help families of suicide bereaved.

so there you have it we.ve had both sides a life lost that wanted so much to continue but their fate was mapped out for them and i life taken because he chose for whatever reason that he couldn't continue !

Can't even begin to understand the depth of pain your brother must have felt to leave a young family behind... But for sure it obliterates the tourist concern mentioned by the original poster. It's not even an issue. However, we have to accept the generational differences when it comes to the way our parents/grand parents swept it under the carpet to avoid scandal and burial issues. Onwards and upwards....
