venere08: The written word can hold so much power. I love books and reading.
And I have a romantic notion of being a writer! As part of my work, I have over the years, written many reports for professional purposes. One day I would love to write a best seller, sit pondering at my laptop as I watch the waves rolling in from my balcony window, someplace wonderful...
I have just joined the SA Writer's Centre, and that really excites me. I have also made contact with a local publisher as I want to write and publish a self help handbook for the lay person
But first, to deal with writer's block!
I would love to know how other writers deal with this phenomenon.
i dabble in song writing ,from time to time...and i would imagine that is much different than writing, say, a novel or something....because, when i have a "block", it seems there's nothing i can do about it except wait...wait for an inspiration...something to jolt me out of my duldrums.....either that, or smoke a little herb....but like i said, writing songs can be a whole lot different...

Yes, I imagine it would be. I am assuming you not only write the lyrics but also the music. You need to have a healthy temporal lobe for that. Not every one does.

What instrument do you play, jl?
yea, so i've heard...although, not so much a temporial lobe, as left hemisphere....but, i had heard about a study that suggested that musically inclined people don't have a left and right hemisphere brain...it's just one mass....i don't think that i believe that...they would have to come up with a whole bunch of musically inclined cadavers for that study ...i play the guitar {and bass guitar}...and piano...
When mental blocks happen, sometimes reading what you've wrote out loud helps.
There are some great suggestions here although I didn't read them all. I don't usually have much of a problem writing, but have done what I've read here.
Mostly I don't give up, sometimes persistance and perserverance is the only way, but occasionally you have to walk away from it.
Eating healty is also a good way to be able to think more clearly as well.

Always write from your heart!
All my best to you!
Nice post.
Nice advice.
I'd like to write from the heart too - if I had one!
I'm listening to the song "Time to Say Goodbye" on youtube, sung by
Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman. I posted it last night.
But it makes me feel very sad and depressed.
Should turn it off.
On a bright note, jl, ever thought of youtube for one of your creations? C'mon, just for us CS'ers. The rest of the world can block their eyes and ears.
Never know, it could rocket you to the top of the CS charts!

venere08: I have actually shot a magnum, and used to be a very good shot at that.
But at a pistol range, at a non-human target!
Me too!
I got 'marksman' using a Browning 9mm and for a time it was my 'personal weapon' when on active duty and getting paid an extra 10 pence per day civilian clothing allowance!
Hey jlw - I'm not used to this website and am online via phone so I can't contact you except this way. Meaning I can't use search.
Writing songs, poetry or whatever, makes no difference. A block is a block. Same in playing an instrument when you play by ear. Sometimes I just have walk away from that as well.
What kind of music do you write, that I am curious.
