The written word can hold so much power. I love books and reading.

And I have a romantic notion of being a writer! As part of my work, I have over the years, written many reports for professional purposes. One day I would love to write a best seller, sit pondering at my laptop as I watch the waves rolling in from my balcony window, someplace wonderful...smitten

I have just joined the SA Writer's Centre, and that really excites me. I have also made contact with a local publisher as I want to write and publish a self help handbook for the lay person professor

But first, to deal with writer's block!

I would love to know how other writers deal with this phenomenon.doh

I have the stories. What I need is the writers. Those who have the skill of the words. What a gift you have. The knowledge of the written work.

Write on the blogs in journal form as I do.
I am not sure if I have any talent but it is nice to get a mail that appreciates what you have written...

Write from the heart.

Not that I am a writer but I do enjoy writing stories and poetry etc. and I have found myself at a loss sometimes for bringing various parts of a story or poem together.

One of the primary things I have found to help is simply putting away the work I am trying to do and then thought flowing... or writing my thoughts as I think them starting with questions such as "Why can't I figure out whats next in my story" I start writing the thoughts that come no matter how they come and if that doesn't provide a result I move on to questions like "why am I writing this at all(meaning the story or poem) etc..

If the above doesn't unblock me or get me going I move on to simple word storming. Writing a single word at the top of a page.. pen and paper... then doing free association and just cramming the page full of words as quickly as possible not paying any attention to where I am looking or what word inspires the next even if it is not associated to the one I just wrote etc... I also make sure to write in random places on the page so it is simply scattered everywhere.

These two things usually work quite well for me but occasionally fail and when they do I walk away from all of it for a few hours and find something else to do that takes my mind completely off of any writing at all. Painting, sewing, cooking, etc something with my hands and that is of a creative nature but is not writing.

Just some things that have helped me in the past, best wishes for you and I hope you will find a technique that works for you. I would love to hear from you if you do find one, as it would be good to have another to try myself.

Write from the heart.

Yes I have done this. The blog is nice but the people who are touched by it, is hard for me to handle. It is like my art, there is pain and I choose not to see others connection to the art.

Wow. Thank you to all of you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. I am taking on board aspects of each of your posts.

The overall message so far is to write, write, write. And then write some more.

And, yes I agree that it's always best to write about something we know well, or passionate about in some way.

Actually, this topic lends itself to starting a new 'Group', and I just tried that but it seems we can only set one new group over a 20 day period.

So if someone else would like to start one, it might really well, as we can have separate threads within that group, for different aspects of writing perhaps. What do you think?

Thanks Ocee, I will look out for it either online or local bookstores. I bought a book on writing when I was in Dublin last year. A great reference text.

I will also enrol in some weekend workshops coming up through the Writer's Centre here. I am excited about that, and just found out there is a local chapter that meets regularly and very active. I think that being with such a group of writers from all walks of life would be a great way to get motivated and stay on track.

Hi N.

Why not write anyway. In getting the stories down, just start anywhere at first, and see where it leads you. Plenty of 'ghost writers' out there to work on the skills side of things for you.
Why don't you give it a try? Seems such a waste keeping the stories inside and not sharing them. dancing JMO

Hi Raven,

What kind of material do you tend to write?
Is it something you do a bit/lot of every day and so you build up a routine?

Hello YesWho, have you started putting any thoughts down yet? Sharing all the above would be invaluable to others in a similar position as yours. Often people feel so alone in their own suffering, whatever the underlying reason. To find out they are not, and indeed to know that another person is out there who reflects some or all of their own experiences, can be so reaffirming.

Do write your book!handshake

In response to: But first, to deal with writer's block!

Well I only write songs and poems, but I think the principal is the same.

For me if the inspiration doesn't come pretty quickly, I feel like I'm on the wrong path for that particular time.
If I try to force it, it will be worthless.

One bit of advice is to be so very very full of your subject that it spills right out of your heart and mind so study, research, meditate, muse, etc etc etc prior to ever even picking up the proverbial pen (I've forgotten how to use a real pen).

I just finished writing a short romance novel today if you have an interest in reading it.
