To make it worse her credit card was declined. I saw the sheer horror in her of the thought of not being able to get her fix. I have to admit to thinking, thank God thats not me!

I stopped a few years back ,but I used the filters,not sure of the name now but it was these plastic things like the tip of those little cigars have on them and you put theses filter things in them and it gives you nicotine ,gives you something in your hand and in your mouth , I tryed stopping many times and these worked great for me...

Get yourself a peice of paper that will slide bedind the cellophane of your cigarette pack and a small pencil. List the times of day on it and put a mark each time you light up. You'll start to see when you smoke the most. Smoke as much as you want for one week and then change to another brand that has less nicotine.
I'll check this thread from time to time and trust others will also help you. Just remember - you can do this if you gradually lower your bodies need for nicotine and learn about your enemy.

As long as I have noone around me that smokes, I can stop cold turkey. My successes when I've decided to quit, have been through the use of hard candy and quitting cold turkey (that way no temptation is nearby).
