pikengren: how are you going about this? someone contributes a basic rythym, and other people start contributing complimentary tracks? i have never had an issue coming up with bits and parts, but always had difficulty completing songs. i'd love to stick around to see how it's done, and contribute if i feel i have something worthwhile to add.

The way I've found that it works best, is for me (or any other drummer) to lay down a drum track in whatever bpm (tempo) is the desired feel for the song..and then pass that on to the guitar player and let him throw down his thing..then send it to the bass player to add rhythm and lay a bed for the guitar..then on to whomever else is going to add flavor to it (keys, horns, etc.), then on to the vocalist to do their thing.

In my opinion, it is better to do it this way, rather than having the lyrics first and then try to add music to it. In other words, the melody first, then the lyrics.

Galactic_bodhi: I play guitar, bass, keyboard, and blues harp, along with a smattering of drums from the past 4 years. Don't know about recording right now as all my recording related equipment is at the band house.

I'm competent at backup vocals and do some blues-related singing with my own compositions, but I'm not into being a steady lead singer for anything. More into playing blues guitar in my spare time.

Very cool, bodhi.

I'm looking to do all sorts of styles as I've done in the past..from rock, blues, metal, alternative, ska, etc.

Just needing folks that can record themselves and send it my way.

Cool!

If you have a drum machine, or a drummer to lay down the backbeat, it would be sweet to hear.

If you can record on a mulitrack, then I can lay down my drum track to your bass, and then we can drop the drum machine audio and replace it with my audio.

There are limitless possibilities here if we can get this brought together. I've been doing Youtube collabs for a while now, and am looking to get back into it on a regular basis.

jlw45: oh yea, forgot to say.....there are several recordings out, of different genras, that have been "put together" via inter-net emails with such programs...it's really a cool deal ...oh, and one more thing....a chic singer that writes her own lyrics that's just asking for trouble

Yes, I agree, it's a very fun thing these internet collaborations. I have a few videos on my page that is right up this alley.

As for the female singer, think Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Melissa Etheridge, etc. I think they have done themselves proud. wink

Just sayin'.

I did think of you when I first got the idea to bring this up here.

If nothing else, we could just do a drum and guitar jam and see what happens. If it entices others to want to add to it, we could watch/hear it build a step at a time.

What style of music do you prefer? Can you give me a couple of bands as examples?

skynyrd, shannon curfman (loud guitars and big suspicions), cry of love (1st album).
all i have is a four track and a playstation 3. i am sure i can figure out a way to get something to you, just might take a while.
that's a cool way to go about it. the only complete song i have(that isn't recorded) i wrote the words first, chord progression, then melody. pretty bassackwards from what i'm reading here. no wonder i never get anything done! lol

I like Cakewalk, but I've never used Cubase so I can't compare.

I really don't like the technical side of recording and I always tried to let somebody else take care of that if possible.

One of my groups used a program called Big Boss, and the results were good, and it seemed to be pretty easy to use, but I wasn't actually doing it, so I can't really say much.

I also have an 8 track hard disk recorder that has a lot of neat features, and really great sound, but its a lot more complicated and slower for editing than using cakewalk and the computer.

Another way to approach recording is to start with a rough recording (what they call a "temoin" in French) with just the voice plus guitar, (neither of which will actually be heard on the final recording). That way all the pauses, accents, tempo changes, etc. etc. etc. are already present and easy to follow.

The drum and base tracks are laid listening to the "temoin".
And then the singer uses the drum and base tracks to record the real voice track and the temoin is discarded before adding the solo instruments.

It allows for doing more complicated songs than would be possible starting with a drumbeat and building upon it.

Yes indeed.

Girl musicians and singers are great. I love 'em.
But not too much in the center-stage spotlight.
Otherwise, trouble with a capital T.

I had a feeling that I would be hearing from you, Ray.

A far as the style, I'm game for just about anything.
