Distress and pity sound like they are more about the giver than the receiver.
Compassion to me is more about empathy put into action.

There are a great many people out there that need some compassion that are viewed as less than human by many people. “Untouchable” is not limited to one culture and not a thing of the past.

Think of the way many with Down’s syndrome are viewed. People with a mental illness or dementia. Any population that so-called normal people would say, “I’d rather be dead than live like that!”
Even something as simple as appeance, speach problems, incontinence or a weight problem can make a person seem less than human to some.
