I will always be able to contribute to a household whether I am out of work or not. The retired Army thing you know plus I have rental property bringing in income. But in answer to the question;
I don't consider myself in competition with a spouse to see who brings in the most. If a future wife made more than me, I wouldn't be bothered by it. Fortunately my line of work doesn't seem to be affected much by downturns in the economy If anything we have more jobs on the books than we can handle. We had to hire subcontractors to keep up.
