I think the same applies to taste.While in Jr. High School, my teacher was discussing about how dogs cannot taste their food and only relied on its scent.
A student had asked him what would the dog food actually taste like then.
His reply; It would probably taste like cardboard.

Would a person who has always been blind know what colour is? Infact, if we had never told them, would they have known they were missing anything at all? (OK, I'm assuming they live on an island with only blind people but you get my drift.)
