puggle: yes! but he`s got a 2yr old son who he can now claim for under the recent changes in the family act law!... atleast get a medical card... and perhaps grant aid towards further education due to his young age??

He can only claim for his son if the childs mother isn't claiming for him.

And she is probably getting her free house and free money and free everything..as Elite thinks all single mothers do.

The medical card and college grants would have applied on Benefit as well. They are not solely for people on Allowance.

Once he has been signing for 6 months he can go back to school/plc/vtos and claim back to education allowance (9 months for a 3rd level course). Both of these are paid at full personal rate as long as he is attending full-time education.

No. The rule still stands that only one CDA (child dependent allowance) is payable in respect of each child. Payment of CDA is made to the parent/guardian with whom the child ordinarily resides, or resides for the greater amount of time.

So if the mother is claiming for the child he can't.

In my opinion, he should share accomodation with friends and get rent allowance on his rent. If he is paying 80 euro maintenance he will be assessed on that and also his rent. Im sure it will work out! He could also reduce his maintenance by law to 40 a week or less if he is unemployed. Put his name down for the 10 year waitng list for the Council Housing!

Tell her to appeal..or tell you the truth!!

If she has means assessed solely from parental income and is entitled to any amount in excess of €1 she is entitled to a minimum payment of €40 per week.

If she had means from other sources (part-time work/self-employment/rent from property/savings etc) they are also taken into account.. which may account for the low amount.

You see people tend to say they only get a certain amount..they forget to tell the whole story.

In response to: My younger brother of 22 is living with his father and is claiming job seekers BENEFIT and he received a letter today saying he must go to the local social welfare office on the 22nd for means testing for job seekers ALLOWANCE
Having just spoken to him on the phone he told me he went to citizens advice today and was told his allowance could be cut to as low as 40 euro
Do the expect him to live on fresh air
He pays 80 euro rent to my dad and has other bills, It would make more sense for him to rent a room in some house with others and he will get the full 200 allowance. Seems to me they would rather see him and my father split and live seperately

well firstly what is your brother doing paying 80 euro a week rent when he could get a room in a shared house for anywhere between 150 and 180 per month secondly if he is paying 80 per week maintainence and on the dole that would be most of his disposable income gone which he doesnt have to pay he only has to give a percentage of his disposable income and if he is only getting 204 a week then 80 is on the extreme side maybe he should look to take his kid a bit extra to make up for not been able to pay as much as when he was working on your other points i agree with you to a certain extent i dont think its the tax payers responsibility to foot the bill for anyone else but you can thank fianna FAILS twisted view of socialism for this

wexlady41: If there is equal residency then neither parent is entitled to One Parent Family Allowance.

They can both sign on (..as long as they are both looking for work etc.) In that case they can claim half the child dependent allowance each.

In any case where One Parent Family Allowance is in payment in respect of a child..nobody else can claim a payment in respect of that child.
thanks for clearing that up petal!!thumbs up hug
