My younger brother of 22 is living with his father and is claiming job seekers BENEFIT and he received a letter today saying he must go to the local social welfare office on the 22nd for means testing for job seekers ALLOWANCE
Having just spoken to him on the phone he told me he went to citizens advice today and was told his allowance could be cut to as low as 40 eurovery mad
Do the expect him to live on fresh air
He pays 80 euro rent to my dad and has other bills, It would make more sense for him to rent a room in some house with others and he will get the full 200 allowance. Seems to me they would rather see him and my father split and live seperatelyvery mad very mad very mad very mad very mad very mad

I'm afraid they will not treat your father as a legitimate landlord and pay him rent allowance. He needs to be careful too what he says cos what he's paying your dad could be subject to tax.

But as I keep saying and you may not like it, 200 euro is too much for a single person's benefit compared to the rest of Europe. That figure will drop in the next year for everybody.

1. Citizens Advice centres do not always give correct information. They do not do means tests, are voluntarily run, and are not trained in the Welfare system.

2. His dad would have to be on huge money with no rent/mortgage for him to get only €40. The vast majority of people living with parents get full amount or close to it.

3. If he is assessed with means and moves out purely to avoid means he can be disallowed altogether.

4. The only one who can change the rules is the minister. So please don't think that the staff in the local office have any say whatsoever in the rules. Staff don't agree with the rules any more than you do.

Having have dealt with the dole office before I can safely say that its not an "us against them" situation when going to sign on.
Years ago i was unfortunate to have to deal with one or two very horrible and ignorant people but on the whole a lot of them are just trying to do the best jobs they can do.
I dont know your familys circumstance but I have found that if you keep calm and go through all the possibilities then you have a better chance of a successful out come in the long run.
Hope it works out for him.

The "shower in the dole office" will do a means test regardless where he lives..and regardless who he lives with. If he is found to be avoiding a means test..he WILL be disallowed.

Why? Because the law says they have to!!!

If you have a problem on your adult brother's behalf..take it up with the minister and see how far you get!!

She is just venting...I can understand her/her brothers fustration.
Some people from the dole office make mistakes too...thats why there is an appeals board. Which in her brothers case he should use it.

can i just get a hold of situation here! he`s presently done the 312 days on the initial dole..so now the means test comes in for the seekers allowance scheme? but he`s been paying out 160 eoro a week out of 204 euro this past year.. leaving him to live on 40 euro... is this correct so far? because if its proven under a certain threshold he might actually get a raise not a cut!

Elite: The whole system is unfair, if he smeared black shoe polish over his face he would get his full entitlements

Ah that old chestnut!!

rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

Means tests, rules and regulations are applied to everyone equally. Whether you like it or not!

Nobody is entitled to claim their stamps (Benefit) for any more than a year (used to be 15 months), then EVERYBODY is means tested (Allowance).

Not a damn thing you or the staff in the dole office can do about it.

Thats a very mis-informed and dangerous attitude. You forget...or maybe dont realise that the irish spread out all over the world not long ago looking for a better life/job because this country could not look after its own.
I wonder how you would feel going to another country and be discriminated against because of your nationality??? "no blacks no dogs no Irish" was not that long ago!

And another thing...how many Irish people have taken advantage of or scammed the welfare system over the years? you reap what you sow.
