petalbabe: Each state has their own view on immigration. Each state has their view on people coming in to the USA.

New York State differs from Texas a tad. Texas differs from Oregon. Oregon differs from California...

So, tell me... what do you think of Americans?

When I started working in Baghdad with Americans I was overwhelmed by their friendliness and helpfulness, and that I shall never forget. I had never experienced this in all my life and have some great friends who live in the States. So yes I do like America and its people and am proud of it too.

Jan1305: Jesse, I´m disappointed, where do I say, or even imply that there is a lower level of culture in America in comparison to Europe? I did not mention this at all, deliberately so. I do not want to be accused of bashing America.

Perhaps you should ponder the definition of the word "culture". It not only means "enlightenment and excellence of taste acquired by intellectual and aesthetic training or acquaintance with and taste in fine arts, humanities, and broad aspects of science as distinguished from vocational and technical skills". (one dictionary definition). Which I think is what you are referring to?

It also means something shared by people in a place or time, or shared attitudes, values and goals. Americans and Europeans in general differ enormously in this second definition, as I´m sure you would agree, particularly after reading some of the posts here.
Hi Jan yes I see you point ...it seemed a bit condesending to me is all as we all do know that many large cities in the states have much to offer in the fields you have meantioned ...but I will lieve it as it is as I do not wish to ruin an otherwise nice thread about America ....this is a very rare creature on CS don't you thinkhug

Jan1305: Hi Ven, good to see you back.

And yes, I agree with your comment which I´ve highlighted. Not sure I would use the same word...spark...but I know exactly what you mean.

Even with the common language shared between some of us, the American culture is poles apart from the culture we share in general in Europe, even taking into account the differences between the States.

I´m not "bashing", I have American friends, (although they have chosen to live in Europe permanently), and it is great to see successful relationships such as that between Petal and Jesse. However, I cannot imagine ever having enough in common with an American man to have a long-term relationship.

Hi Jan, nice to see you, too. I just returned from Italian summer weather (I think they might skip autumn!), and find it hard to adjust to the cold spring nights back home.

Yes, it's great to see Petal and Jesse and I know there are many more out there. I, too, have friends in America, and they are like chalk and cheese. Nonetheless, I know America would not be my country of choice to settle long term, except for New York City, which I love (except for the Upper West during a major garbage strike!). I think I'm too hooked on the frenzy of European railway stations :). Well, just the way I feel when I am there. Alive. I don't feel that in the States and I don't know why. So it's me, and naught to do with Americans.

And yes, I agree with you about the word 'spark'. I struggled to find the right word, so it was the best I could do at such a hideous hour:)
