A friend has found 2 puppies dumped in a rubbish bin, she knew i was thinking about getting a dog from the Rescue Centre so she called me, although i have had dogs before, never a puppy.

The pups are about 6 weeks old was wondering the best type of food to feed her.

Oh, Morgan, congratulations! Oh, that pup got a good, loving home! applause

OK, I feed raw, but most people don't choose to do that. My recommendation, though, would be if you don't want to do that, at least get a good, human-grade dog food. There are several on the market. The better the food you feed your pup, the healthier they will grow up to be.

If you have training questions, email me. I'm a certified obedience trainer, and love helping new mommies and daddies. (I gave up my business because I gave the help away free enough that I never really made any money at it. My heart's too soft. laugh )

Make sure the food has plenty of suppliments in for a pup that age. It would also be a good idea just to take it to the vet for a check up. I love hearing stuff like that. Parents got their last rotwieler from Battersea Dogs Home. What a gem he was. wine

"i did find her very timid and she was whimpering put it down to new surroundings and her feeling unsettled?"

She basically just lost her Mommy and brothers and sisters so unsettled is an understatement for her! As soon as she clues in to associating you with FOOD she'll start to feel better.
The old trick was to put a big ticking clock under the bedding in the belief it would mimic the beating of a heart for them to replace Mommies heart beat...(maybe if I were the TinMan missing Dorothy I could buy into that! Too mechanical a sound I think???)

Sounds like your going to have fun!smitten love smitten

That's a possibility, or it could be her temperment. Time alone will tell...poor thing has just had it very rough, so give her a lot of love and affection, and let her adjust to her new surroundings. God knows what she went through before landing in a dumpster. Love and gentle training will go far with any dog.

I hope the other puppy found a good home too. bouquet

My dogs sleep in my room with me...comforting for all of us. They're pack animals and the pack sleeps together. For a pup, I'd suggest having her sleep in a crate at first until you know she's housebroken, and keep one ear open for sounds that she needs to go out in the middle of the night, for she will for a while. Smaller breeds take longer to housebreak because of their small bladders.

Sleeping in your room and sleeping in your bed are two different matters. Mine have their own beds on the floor, and the pack leader sleeps on high ground. (And they know better than to ever get on my bed, even when they get on my sons beds and the guest bed.) dancing dog

Hi Morgan,

Congrats on your new "daughter"! applause She will most likely need to be wormed, if you can, get a stool sample to the vet so they can check for any hidden worms and other parasites, have them check her ears, her temperature, her teeth and gums to make sure that they are healthy and in good working order. Can you tell that I was a veterinary technician before I became a Reverend? I also worked with a professional dog groomer, breeder and show exhibitor. grin laugh

You little girl is unfamiliar with her surroundings, hence her whimpering, so if you can start her with crate training immediately. You can put in one of your t-shirts that smells like you with her to help bring her comfort and to help her become familiar with your scent. You can lay a cozy blanket in the crate for her to sleep on along with your t-shirt. Be sure to hug her and pet her TONS to help her bond with you.

Congrats again! cheering angel

If you add a filled hot water bottle wrapped in a towel along with a ticking clock to the puppy's bedding, it will be less likely to whimper all night long. It is probably timid due to losing his/her litter mates.
