robpacciani: its grand for you to say, you obviously dont want to work!!!

'Want' doesn't come into it. Would love to work outside the home but no job (Civil Service included) could be as flexible as I would require it to be. Personal and family reasons that cannot be ignored.

i was at the blocks myself but artrithis forced me to stop but i do remember the jealousy that tradesmen could be paid so much completely forgetting that they broke there backs building the country and the tax that they paid also. To the public servents get back to work but before ye do get down on yer knees and be greatful for what ye have

Normally I wouldn't have any time for this strike or the pickets. However, as the state seemed to have the money to bail out the bankers without a single one being called to account, then anything adds to this governments unpopularity is fine by me.

I'd be very wary about this public sector / private sector arguement. While we all fight with each other, politicians continue to look after their own interests and those of their friends. May I remind you that Brian Cowan is paid more than Barak Obama.

scriobhneoir: Good luck to all those CS members striking today. My organisation is one of those affected by the fallout from the floods, so we won't be taking part, but good luck to those involved.

Said on TV and Radio that the tailbacks into Newry were huge! Great way to help the economy. Strike for the day and cost the country millions and on your "day off" head up north and spend your money in the UK.

Yip the Government are pitting the public and private sector against each other and while everyone is at each other no one is looking at the real people who got us ALL both public and private workers into the mess..... the elected Government that was put into power by the people so maybe we the people should look at holding them accountable for squandering the money that the country had made during the boom years.frustrated

And yes you are right Keith where are they getting the money to bail out the bankers ????

They borrowed the money to bail out the banks. Should we borrow money to keep the public sector workers in the style they are accoustomed too? dunno

Thats so outa line. Anyone with a job who calls someone unemployed lazy is just a fool! Were all these people lazy when the economy was booming? No!!! They all had jobs and worked hard! But they lost their jobs through no fault of their own. There are 500,000 people unemployed....are there 500,000 jobs on those sites? Muppet!tongue

I can see you are very diplomatic JLM but most of us have walked in their shoes. They are striking against cuts to wages most of us have had to endure already. We have endured lower wages since January.
Also yes there lower paid public sectot workers but none on less that 25k a year. If you go onto most jobs site you will see most admin private sector jobs are offering way less that that now. Plus if their wages are cut by 5% it means someone on 100k a year is down 5k and someone on 25k is down 1250 euro.
Also they are going about things arese about face. They governmant still has not made any final decision on public sector pay but they are striking before the budget?
Its a just in case strike that is costing the country millions! There are also thousands of them travelling up North to spend their money in the UK when they are costing the country millions already. The teachers only picketed till 10am and then went home. All the rest are picketing in 2 hour shifts!
They cant even be bothered to picket for the day!
