I shop in the local supermarket, all the people who work there are from around the town and Irish, they also employ locals on a part time basis which has helped countless young people including a few of my nieces and nephews work their way through college over the years, during the eighties the government had a buy Irish campaign which encouraged us to support business who produced goods here,, If all Irish people shopped where Irish people are employed and gave work to Irish tradesmen etc the whole country would be better off,,

yeah i do agree wiht you...but im on a very tight budget and if i get more for my money by driving for an hour and a half im certainly going to do that drive....if i was just shopping for myself i wouldnt bother but cos ive a family to feed and a daughter still in nappies, and kids who just grow out of their clothes at an astounding rate....it economic sense to me to go north...and not just clothes for the kids but for me too, the clothes are almost half the price up there in the same chain store.....example.....i buy my clothes in Evans...its a plus size clothes shop....last xmas i went up to newry...bought a fab top for 30 pounds... the same top was in evans in blanch for 58euro. it took me 20 minutes extra driving to get to newry than it would to get me to blanch....as a lady from newry i welcome all from the south and should the euro rate reverse i will once again shop across the border. on my last trip to dundalk i nearly had a stroke at the prices so i don`t blame southerners for crossing the border good luck to anybody who can make savings at any time of the year but more so at xmas when the bills are always higher. if you are travelling to newry shopping i recommed bellinis for a meal might be a little pricey but the quality is great. hope to see you all in newry soon good luck bargain hunting
by the way the nearest asda to newry is in kilkeel about 20 miles from newry but the best asda for clothes is in downpatrick bit of a drive from newry but worth the effort

I do all of my grocery shopping locally but for other stuff I shop in Enniskillen for reasons that I mentioned before.
I would love to think that I was helping kids go through college but I can only support myself at this time selfish and all as that might sound.
I have friends/family who have become unemployed recently and they have no option but to go North to do their shopping as they cannot afford to feed and clothe their families with the prices in the republic. It would be nice to think that as individuals we could support the local retailers but where is the incentive when the Government are proposing to cut unemployment benefits and childrens allowance benefits? Everybody has to try and stretch their money as far as they can to support a family.
