I like South American red wines - Chilean, Argentinian, etc..I have also discovered that New York wines are great, and really good value too..wine

Ive never been a Wine Snob, and considered anything under a certain price not worth drinking, and have found that some less expensive wines are extremely nice.

Recently, I have found a lovely tasting boxed wine, and its perfectly acceptable!!grin wine

Does the percentage value on a label really relate to the quality of the taste other then brand-x has this much vs. brand-y has this little?

I personally do not think so.

Being Italian, my answer is obviously Italian Wines. Here wine is a considered a staple (not because Italy is a country of alcoholics, but because wine has been around forever) therefore it sells much cheaper than elsewhere.
When I'm in the US, I gladly spend some extra bucks for a French or Italian bottle because I know no other wines in the world have the same quality level those wines have. Remember that Italians and French have been making wine for the last 2,000-plus years, i.e. more than Chile, South Africa, Australia, etc. together.
Few names? In late years Southern Italy has offered excellent wines at incredibly low prices. Try Nero d'Avola (Sicily, red); Primitivo di Manduria (Apulia, red); Cannonau (Sardinia, red); Fiano di Avellino (Campania, white); Vermentino di Alghero (Sardinia, white).
The list could go on and on but I don't want to bore you.
Cheers!

You got to be kidding! Here where Wine Culture is alive and well (thank Heaven), only bottom-level stuff has screw tops. Cork is used for high-end products because is by far the best material for the task. May I suggest you buy some good book about winesoyou can get documented.

Let me put you all into the picture.

South Africa produces the finest wines - red and white as well as sparkling wines on the planet in our world famous gorgeously beautiful wine route in the Cape. Google for yourself...

Sadly for yobs like myself a lot is exported and too expensive for us.

A personal little favourite that I can come by is an extra dry white from Twee Jong Gesellin called Schanderl - harvested at night.

Yes I know it's a white wine - as for reds also affordable from Zonnebloem Estate a beautifully fruity Shiraz.

I buy some pretty good Venetian Merlot for 2 euros and 50 cents for a 1.5 litre bottle.............. that's the equivalent of just 1.25 euros for a normal size 0.75 litre bottle.

Ok, call me a wine snob...but if you'r onjy drinking wine to "get the job done" maye it's time to switch to teqjila! Give me a cork in a good bottle of italian brunello or austrlian shiraz/merlot blend and i'm a happy girl... There'a a lot to be said for a good spanish rioja as well!

You can get red wine at just about any price you want. If it's just for wine go for your any price. Myself, I love french and italian wines the best. French--beaujolais, a good cabernet savingon, pinot noir, there are a couple of roses not too bad either. For italian, I prefer valpolacella, montipullciano, sangiovese(my spelling is horrible). I like to find the different grape blends, or different grapes. There are a few spanish, austrailian also. People rave about wine here or in California, and I'm just not excited about them. I'm not trying to be a snob, but there's nothing better than a wonderful wine with what your eating or not...wine

Historically Bulgarian wine can be traced back to ancient Thrace and the Greek god of wine "Dionysus".
Bulgarian territory was one of the regions where many of the wine traditions were founded during this period of the Hellenistic world. The cultured vine is said to have first been grown in Central Asia. The earliest traces of its origin within what is now Bulgaria go back 3,000 years.
