Hi to all, Just wondering how much the cold snap has effected some of our lives over last few weeks? I had no water for last 3 days even though i have my own well at home, everything was frozen, i even had to melt snow to supply my dogs of drinking water. And this morning i awoke at 6am to hear a loud bang, but after 10 mins got up to go to toilet and my hall, sitting room, and spare room was flooded, the bang was a pipe in attic broke from joint and was pouring threw the ceilng. Every where was flooded and i had to turn of a valve while cleaning up the damage. But i finally have it sorted now, and thank got there is a break from the harsh weather for a while again. Just interested to see what problems it has caused others? Let us know your stories
Im kinda going off topic here Sukatai but just so you know and im makeing a presumption here on the age of your house so forgive me if im wrong
If a persons house is pre 1990 it will not really have proper insulation in the cavity walls or attic space as the building standards were pretty bad
You can insulate your cavitys of the house(providing there not badly blocked by mortar) and replace your domestic hot water tank to a factory foamed tank and insulate your attic to approx 10" enabling you to hide them pipes in the attic for approx 2 to 2.5k..you will recoup that loss in approx 5 years at todays energy price....and a lot of houses are entitled to a sei grant ....just thought that mighr be helpful

Ah thanks for that advice, it is an old house, but all new pipe work in last 4 years, i do have the factory foamed tank i got 2 year ago,, but as you say the is no insulating in the walls, and the attic only has the fibre rolls,, but the plumber that gutted and restored the whole house just threw the pipes every where, (cowboy) i must double wrap them for the future, just never expected this harshness and wont be so stupid again, thank you for your advice and i will check it out
irish1978eyes: Im thinking of the homeless all week!!
We have alot to be thankful for realy
ya you have to feel for them i was thinking that before xmas saw it on the news its amazing really that in this day in age that there are still people all over the world that live on the streets i cant even start to imagine how they feel and whatthey must go through
i live in connemara...we've been very lucky...compared to most... plenty of ice...and a little snow...which hasn't settled..
my cousin who lives nearer galway city...has been without water for 3 days like yourself....and says the worst part is getting the toilets to flush...
but its nothing compared to what youve suffered...hope things improve quickly for you and others....
Ya it was like that with myself,, but i was blessed in a way as it happened at 6am, an other hour and i woulda been gone to work until 6 this evening,, i would have then come home to a collapsed ceiling from 9 hours of running water,, so i was very lucky, the difference an hour can make really. but like you i hope others haven't been affected to bad and get back to normal soon, and like irish says, the homeless and the elderly have suffered a lot more, so hats off to them for there strenght.

Sounds like you're having a bad time over there, but if I heard a bang I would've been out of bed in a flash! If I hear any unfamiliar noises when I'm in bed I just have to get up to see what it was. No danger of frozen pipes here thank heavens although have put the heating on tonight.
