George Lee has sensationally resigned his Dail seat in the last few minutes. RTE's ex ace hack released this statement to the media today....

I wish to announce that I have resigned from the Fine Gael Party and from my seat in Dáil Eireann today Monday 8th February 2010.

It has been a very difficult decision, but it is one that I have taken after a great deal of reflection on my position and on the role that I have been playing in Fine Gael since I joined that Party in May last year. The nine months since then have been a period of enormous economic upheaval. Throughout that period I have done my best to play a positive role in contributing to the national debate and to efforts to find a solution for many of the country's economic problems.

The reality, however, is that despite my best efforts I have had virtually no influence or input into shaping Fine Gael's economic policies at this most critical time. The role I have been playing within the party has been very limited and I have found this to be personally unfulfilling.

When I entered politics last May I made it clear that I was doing so because I wanted to try to play a new role contributing to economic policy formulation. After nine months of trying within the political system it is now my considered view that the role available to me within Fine Gael is not a role I am happy to play.

I would like thank most sincerely all those who campaigned for me, for all of their efforts and support. I would also like to thank my Secretarial and Parliamentary Assistants for all of the help and work that they have provided to me.

I particularly want to thank the electorate of Dublin South who voted for me in such large numbers last May. It has been a great privilege and an honour to serve on their behalf. However, I do not believe I would be serving the electorate honestly if I were to continue allowing my efforts and mandate to be used to promote and market economic policies into which I have had no input.

Regardless of what side your politics are, you'd hate to have voted this cry baby into power only to see him run off as he has just done. Can you imagine what would have happened if he had have a cabinet portfolio; he'd have lasted maybe an wet weekend laugh

I think Enda promised him that he would be on the shadow cabinet by now but that did not happen so he has thrown his toys out of the pram and left the Dail. I always thought he was an idiot anyway.laugh laugh

What did he expect - that he would be elected and change the world?? These guys make all these promises to the voters etc and then when they get elected they find that their hands are tied and they can't do all the things they said they would! A bit of research would probably help before they make promises they can't keep!!

Thought he was an excellent commentator though ...

The poll on Joe Duffy today took 16,000 votes in 10 minutes.

Y -- Right to go

N -- Wrong to go

Apparently over 13,000 yes votes were registered.

Dont know how many of those were from the people of South Dublin -- many of whom gave George "Flee" their first preference vote in the last poll.

I voted N by the way -- He should have stayed and fought harder for what he believed in .

Hate a quitter!!

or

Is this the end of the story??......................

No, definitely not the end of the story..... David McWilliams .... will stop flirting with Miriam O'Callaghan and will marry her.... between them they will then have, what 100 kids, enough to keep the Dail going for a few years........ he will also write a sequel to the Rise & Fall of Reggie Perrin and the likes...... laugh

George Lee had to resign because the reality of political life had finally dawned on him. Fine Gael are not going to change the world, they are going to create the hype and illusion of change in order to get into power. Gerorge reminds me of Johnny Giles and my neighbour. He has brillant insight into what every body is doing wrong but is lost when it comes to coming up with pragmatic solutions. Fine Gael are not going to do a Margaret Thather on the Unions, are not going to cut welfare in line with EU averages, are not going to eradicate cronyism.
George is a victim of his own celebrity.

Not true... Apparently it was discovered that George Lee was ,in fact, the secret love child of Charlie Haughey and Mary Harney. Turns out Mary is a lot older then she was lettin on. Enda discovered this last week and wanted George gone a.s.a.p. Rumours also abound that the title of George's next book is going to be somethinh like "It was my party and I'll throw a hissy fit if I want to"

You havnt read about this because all George's friends in the media have colluded to keep the lid on the story. But the truth will out......

You mark my words... you heard it here first........

My own point of view:

He was used to gain support for Fine Gael.
He did not want a front bench seat, he just wanted to deal with economics and try to make a difference.
Yes he is quite a cocky individual, but he is a very smart man.
His knowledge will be sorely missed in politics.
He was supposed to be the new young blood that this country needs.
Money is not the issue, please dont focus it around money.
Bruton did not want him there in my opinion, as it was clear if Lee was promoted, the only mans job he could take was Brutons.

The man made his own choice, im certain there is more to it than what has been shown by him and by the media.
If it was such a great job, he would still be there.
