Four children have been taken into care by the HSE after being found without adult supervision in a house in Co Meath.
Gardaí went to a house in Navan yesterday after concern was raised about the children living there.
When they entered the well-maintained house they found three girls aged 12, six and four, as well as their five-month-old brother. The children were physically well.
AdvertisementThe children were initially brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where the HSE took them into care.
The HSE went to court to secure a temporary order and the children will remain in the HSE's care until next week at least.
It is believed the children's mother had travelled to England earlier this week and is expected to return tomorrow. Gardaí are likely to interview her on her return.
An older daughter, believed to be around 20 years of age, was left in charge but was not present when the gardaí arrived.
