somechick: I figured you were only joking. I remember when I was a parent volunteer and found out that one of my sons 4th grade classmates couldn't read.I don't have a clue as to how that kid made it any farther in school then he did .It seemed to me that he was just passed on from one grade to the next.
And I hear so much about 'No child left behind'

ya, I used to tutor in the elementary schools. Fortunately it was a small rural district, so we did pretty well with that sort of thing. A lot of it does go back to how well education is valued in the home, and the stability of the home life. Not easy to accomplish anything when there is not stability in one's life.

On another note, your stories remind me of a real life situation that occurred in my family recently.

My mom passed away this summer, as did yours (cryingcomfort ). She lived in Florida in her own condo for years , but my sister and I have always lived up north near our own family & kids. My sister had gone to Fla. to help my mom move back into her condo from a rehab center after the third surgery on her legs. So my mom was in weakened condition. when my sister got back up north, she would call periodically to check on mom. One time she called & my mom answered saying she had fallen & could not get up (but apparently could reach the phone, I guess). So my sister called the Delray Florida police Dept. The officer went to my mom's condo & rang the doorbell - mind you he knew the full story - then he called my sister and asked HER what to do because mom wouldn't come to the door.doh

My sister - on the phone in her home in Portland Maine had to give the Delray, Fla. police officer step by step instructions what to do. Unbelievable? Ya, but it is true.

I've known parents who put all the blame on the school systems for the reason their children don't function in the real world. That they're taught no life skills.
