Of course its not impossible. But why would they want to join the Euro. I know when Ireland started using Euros the country was ripped off. All retailers, hotels, pubs, taxis and every business basically rounded all their prices UP!! Everything became more expensive.
Also its really Germany and France that control the ECB Interest rate. This is bad for a country like Ireland. We are not out of recession yet but I guarentee they Germans and French will raise the ECB interest rate by the end of the year. This will be a disaster for us. I think Ireland should leave the Euro, go back to the punt and de-value it straight away. This will increase out competitivness in the world market today.

Because the pound sterling is a sovereign currency, if it goes so does British sovereignty, it is the only thing that separates the UK from the rest of Europe, plus it gives the UK an edge on exporting and importing pricing. There are no advantages to the UK joining the euro other than making it a bit easier when travelling in the rest of Europe and having to exchange pounds for euros

Tony Blair, et. al) the administrations' succinct reply was that Great Britain would NOT change the financial portfolios. They were quite adamant, as I recall. (Most British financial professionals believe it would be a mistake to join the Euro, as I understand).

redsetter45: hi but has the euro been a good thing for ireland [celtic tiger]or not???? your problem is now you have got to start paying your share instead of taking out of the communaty and start paying back to help other joining countries!! as for the punt,£,s,p euros iv saw them all in ireland and its a fact that if the irish can rip the irish of they will nothink to do with the euro just gready as for your goverment right wing rouges and bent!! was the uprising worth it??? even some of them sold you out !o by the way im irish and very proud of it

Well to answer your questions. No personally I dont think the Euro has been good for Ireland. I think that in the EU France and Germany run the show. Most decision made are made to suit the larger countries and I personally believe Ireland would be better off going it alone. And people in the UK rip each other off too. Hence you housing price collapse in the early 90's.

Its true Ireland did get a lot from the old EEC and we are paying a lot in now but thats not the reason I want to leave the Euro.
The fact I want to change back to the punt has nothing to do with rip off Ireland. It has to do with exports. Because the Euro is strong against the Dollar and Pound our exports are suffering. We can't do anything about it. But if we went back to the Punt we could de-value it and thus make ourselves more competitive in the world market. The UK has de valued the pound on many occasions.
Our government is right wing and bent. They are supporting banks and big business at the expense of the ordinary tax payer. But your government have done the same. And the expenses some politicans in the UK claimed tells me that your government is as bent as any in the world.
Yes the war of independace was worth it. Thats a stupid question. I would much rather be ruled by bent Irish politicians in Dublin than bent British ones in London. roll eyes

Honestly you are taking gibberish now. But I will take a stab at answering.

Manufacturing companies are going to the wall because they rely on Exports. In Ireland our main market is the UK. With the Euro so strong against the pound it makes it very expensive for UK companies to do business with us. If we had the Punt we could de-value it and make it cheaper for foreign countries to buy good from here. Hence increasing business and employment. But we cant do this while we are in the Euro.

When did I say you should be booming????????????????????????????????????????????? I am talking about IRELAND. Our economy is totally different than yours. OUR ECONOMY is over relaint on EXPORTS so the strong Euro is hurting us. The UK economy is not as reliant on exports as Ireland. roll eyes doh
