I moved from Switzerland to Bali.
I love the blue sky and the amazing light/colors. I love being able to walk bare feet most of the time and driving by car through flooded streets during rainy season and I like eating Indonesian food with the hand. blushing I really appreciate the toilet showers and couldn't imagine to life without them anymore.

i really like asia also. thailand is awesome and i have been teaching in china nearly 3 years. excellent cultural history and great food here. also the students are really hip on western culture. western teachers here enjoy a small celeb status because china is very hungry for western stuff. spain and belgium are pretty cool too.

Which do you prefer, Thailand or China? When my contract ends next year I was thinking of teaching in Thailand or maybe somewhere in Indonesia.

actually i have a 2 fold answer for that. i've found that the salaries are somewhat higher and most contracts in china include a free apartment sometimes with utilities paid. i prefer thailand for leisure. the salaries are a little low and most do not include accommadations. also i've spent a lot of time learning to speak chinese. kinda tuff to start again with a new language like thai. btw thai language has 5 or 6 tones. chinese only 4 and they drive me crazy! where are you working now?

Maybe I'm just jaded, but I've lived overseas for nearly nine years and have reached the conclusion that there's nothing special about living in another country.

There might be unique differences in language, differences in culturual rules, and differences in everyday living (prices, food, activities, etc.), but in reality, everything is pretty much the same. People are people - if you couldn't find happiness living in your home country, you won't find it somewhere else.

The only thing that makes living in another country special is the environment - the land, the weather, the animals. I've been in Taiwan for the past five winters and I'm actually starting to miss snow. The only time I have felt cold here is standing by the walk-in freezer at costco.

That said, I have no desire to return to winters of -40°C.

I've spend a view months in Thailand, I agree it's awesome just the language to hard to learn. Not yet been to China. We've a lot of Chinese tourists here.. Glad to hear you're working on it to teach them English seems to me they're worst at it as me. Also been to Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Australia and Holland. Belgium? laugh I just had earlier for the first time some Belgium chocolate.. My son and I agreed that we would never travel to Belgium.

actually, i somewhat disagree with you. i think it takes a unique adventurous personality to step out of the comfort zone and live abroad. for me it is special when i think about how many americans never leave the comforts of home. you are correct about the land, weather, animals etc. also, personally, i have found much happiness in asia. no more living paycheck to paycheck, living in hainan now so no more chicago winters. cheers!

No was going to do my TEFL but was around the world as a travel writer. But unfortunately I am not in demand too much lately. I suppose you have to think where is living? Has to be some criteria so only set out the places of 6 months or over. Best place was Bulgaria for the people alone. cheers

yeah, that's a pretty good criteria...i'd say anything over 3 months could qualify as residency. best of luck with the writing

I’ve worked abroad for most of my working years so I had the chance to live in many countries. Countries that I lived in for more than 6 months are Algeria, Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Equilateral Guinea, Chad, Indonesia, Kuwait, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. At the moment I’m in Europe (Spain/France) since December 2009. I also visited many other countries. I enjoyed Bali a lot; I wanted to buy ocean front land there at the time but it had to be in an Indonesian name so I dropped the idea. Now I’d like to visit the Scandinavian countries, Eastern Europe, Russia and Turkey.
