...you consider to be a modern hero or heroine and why? In these times of media hyped nobodies who achieve short term fame and adulation, albeit for a short period in most cases, it seems to me that hero/heroine status is granted for no good reason. I can think of many people in the past who, in my opinion, deserve it, but I'm finding it difficult to come up with a modern day hero/heroine.

I'd have to say my wee girl, she's only just been diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disorder after epilesy therapy failed and when she recieved some gifts she made sparklin happy thank-you cards for everyone thanking them for their kind thoughts, and wished them all to stay well too and telling them not to worry about her. Broke my heartcryingshe'll always be my heroine. Does that fit the bill dunno

Yes of course, she is a real heroine. Children often have more strength in their little fingers than adults.

Love and best wishes to your daughter.

I agree totally with Jan that the term is much overused and seriously devalued in todays society.

There are many personal heroes and heroines, like those already discussed in this thread.

On a National or International scene I think of names like Mother Theresa, Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King.

Controversial to some perhaps; but in my opinion truly worthy of the name.

Agree here too especially when you see contestants from shows like big brother and the like plastered over the papers and doing interviews on tv. My heros have no names they are the little people who keep our hospitals going and our schools open ect....

cheers

Hi. I agree totally with your choices except perhaps Mother Theresa for reasons which I don't really want to get into, however I am asking you people about modern day heroes/heroines and in my view they seem to be few and far between.

Exactly, you only have to appear on a game show now and you shot to stardom, the real heroes get the small print at the back of the paper by the tv guide bit or just ignored.

No arguement there Jan.

Difficult to think of a modern day individual who comes anywhere near justifying that description.

Of course we have many unsung heroes and heroines but who has done something or changed things on a global scale?

Setfree,

Have to disagree with your nomination of Diana.

Charismatic - Yes

Popular - Yes

Photogenic - Yes

Heroine - No.
