mmichaelm: Turning 50 was no big deal to me. I was more depressed turning 30. At this age, hell..I'm proud (and surprised) I lived this long considering how many candles I burned at both ends when I was 30
Yes it was a biggie for me too! Little did I know back then!!! I do think ageing is easier for men, but hey, what do I know - I'm not one! I have a soft spot for Southern writers... Pat Conroy and William Wharton are two of my favourites.

leostartingover: I'm turning 50 in 10 days time and feel really miserable about it! When I was young, 50 seemed so OLD! I still feel young, but now at 50 I am definitely middle aged..... Eeeeeeek. I think it is more about having certain expectations about what my life would be like by 50 which have not happened.....
I remember 30 being a huge milestone in my life, I even wrote a funny poem about the joys of ageing; but 40 felt good. I'm going to have to think up a really good poem for the big 50!!!!
Do you feel the same about milestone birthdays??? Which have been your biggies?
50 is nothing to worry about.like a good wine ,the flavour of life gets better

leostartingover: Thanks so much Bella! I really don't want to go the plastic surgery or even botox route but I think I'm feeling rather insecure with being menopausal, single and 50!!! I know the feeling will pass... and I'll soon be back to my cheerful self, but to be honest, right now I don't feel like celebrating it - would rather go to a remote island on my own and wallow in it for a few days!!!

not old sweet lady not at all here it all is, laid before you
why a mile at a time? what would have been, never was, as it is for you now, you have that knowledge now, of what could have been
I had a pretty cool 50th not bouncing raging times, well sort of! ok then it was very cool
My friends band played, same age or a tiny bit younger and older, watching them play, from years ago in our youth, so handsome they stood they played with all vigour and tempted and pushed the frets,
Now at my 50th again they stood their ground there they stood more handsome and and life upon their face, but the music and voices were deeply tuned, so much more of character and richness spread around the room.
Just trying to share with you, age is richness, it really is how you feel and to what your passion in life is, to enable you to put that out there.

I'm very greatful how long I've lived considering I could have gotten killed in combat while at Vietnam at 18 . The big 50 was a mild stone for me and feel young at heart still.....that's all that matters to me.

Hey thanks mad Aquarian!!! You're right, it is richness.... I shall keep popping my Femodene (homeopathic menopausal tabs) and get my sunny mood back again... I'm going with a bunch of gals to an 80s show all dressed up in our 80s outfits, so should be a laugh!!!!

Happy birthday when it gets here.
Thanks Menu2 and thank goodness you survived Vietnam. I pray that my boys will never have to fight in a war. Yes 50 is a milestone, and I am really pleased I also feel young at heart still... Funny, I just spoke to my (ex) mum in law, who said she also felt miserable turning 50 but it was nothing compared with turning 80!!!! Puts it in perspective, doesn't it?!!!
