leisure07: the world never ended last saturday probably gone out of sync i blame the satelites

laugh yeah, you could be right there Mr Leisure!

Well.... Unfortunately, I didn't see the aurora. I decided to drive down the road to the big field where you can get panoramic views of the sky. Began my watch at 11.20pm and sat there on my owneo for 40 minutes in the dark gazing longingly up at the night sky, but saw nothing blues I got out of the car a few times and just listened. I always love that...it is so silent at night that you can hear all the wildlife really clearly. Heard the local tawny owl, some geese somewhere out in the darkness, and on the road the frantic calling of a mama Oystercatcher and her two chicks. I saw them in the road, on the way out and they were my first sighting of fledglings this season. On the way back the oystercatchers were still there in the middle of the road, except there was only one baby. I turned off the car engine and just watched them in the headlights for a few minutes. I was tempted to shoo the baby out of the road, and out of harm's way, but you shouldn't really interfere with wildlife at this time of the year, when they have young. The mum was obviously very concerned about her other chick and was calling it and running up and down the road. I am sure they would have found one another eventually.

As a young child I was sent to spend time with my Aunt while my mother was ill in hospital, I was very upset and felt very lonely being so far from home and in a strange land. The first night I was very restless and could not sleep, I found myself stood at the window staring across the harbour and wishing that I was back in England. It was then through teary eyes that I first saw something magical happen, a wisp of green light slowly threaded its way through the sky like a snake moving through the grass. I remember being transfixed to the spot as more and more colours became apparent and the whole sky was alight with reds, blues and greens, all trying to compete for the greatest show on earth. The sky was alive and every movement was being copied in the still waters of the harbour, appearing to be both deliberate and graceful. The feeling of being homesick soon disappeared and every night I would stare out the window for a while and scan the horizon for their return.
I saw them again several times before I returned home, however not once could it be compared to that first night. Now I occasionally look out the window and yearn to re-visit that place and experience the beauty and awesome glory of that dance once more.

Forgot to mention....

I am going to Mars!!!!

And, before you ask.....No, I haven't been at the drinking

I have just registered my name with NASA. It will be put onto a microchip and sent up with the rover that is going to Mars!!!!!

As my 81 year old mum is also an armchair adventurer, I have added her name too!

If you fancy doing this, go onto the NASA website and put Mars Science Laboratory Rover into their search bar. You should then see the relevant page.

See you up there!!!!
yay yay yay

Hmmm, a poet. dancing Well I have posted a few in the poetry corner. grin

I did forget to mention where I was when I saw the Aurora doh

I was staying in Stykkishólmur which is in the North West of Iceland, A beautiful part of the country and some where I would like to re-visit. I have not been back since I was a child and would certainly hope to once again see the lights from such a Northern lattitude.
