Enough is Enough ! I'm gonna have to agree with blocking this 26 Billion dollar bill to save some Teachers and Firemen's jobs !!
These public employees have so far been immune to the economic hardships the rest of us suffer from this severe recession.
Most all these public employee agencies have conducted business as usual with pay increases and retirement benefits over the past few years. In fact here where I live they've actually been hiring additional employees for newly created programs with grant funding and special new property assessments !
I say it's time to let some police, firemen, and teachers go in proportion to our decreased property values. Local public agencies can't continue to live like hogs off grant funding and our local assessments ............

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US senators cleared the way Wednesday for passage of a 26 billion dollar spending measure to fund education in cash-strapped states and health care for low-income Americans.
The chamber voted 61-38 to end debate and procedural moves to clear the way for the bill to help provide more funding to states squeezed by the economic crisis.
A final vote was expected as soon as Thursday.
The bill contains 16.1 billion dollars to extend funding for the Medicaid program for low-income Americans. It also adds 10 billion dollars for education, a move that backers say would save 100,000 teacher jobs.
"When our children start a new school year this fall, their classrooms will be less crowded and there will be a teacher at the blackboard. That's what today?s vote promises," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said ahead of Wednesday's vote.
Republican Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe joined Democrats in the procedural vote, enabling Democrats to get the 60-vote supermajority needed to end debate.
Democrats said the new spending was offset by some new revenue measures.
The bill would need approval from the House of Representatives, which is on recess until September.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said in a release on Twitter that she "will be calling the House back into session early next week to save teachers' jobs and help seniors & children."
Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand also said heading back to Washington was in order.
"I think the right thing to do would be for members of the House to briefly return to Washington so that we can send the legislation to President Obama immediately and deliver assistance to local schools and hospitals right away," she said.

I don't have a problem with extending the Medicaid portion, but to continue to let public employees live like Kings on us

Now, many cities in Oklahoma have figured out a way to keep the fireman on staff. They have hired an outside collection company to bill insurance companies for fire runs to homeowners inside and outside the city limits. Now, our fireman are paid by our tax dollars and now they want the insurance companies to also pay for each fire run. The people that live outside the city, pay an annual fee for fire protection, but they still will get a bill for their insurance company to pay a fee for a firerun. Now, lets see,
we had a small fire across the street from where I work, a cigarette in the stairwell. No flames, just smoke. They sent 6 fire trucks @ 650 per hr (minimum 1 hr) plus a haz mat truck @ 1200 per hr and billed this persons insurance carrier.
Now how long do you think it will take for this cost to trickle down to our insurance cost? Not long, I'll tell ya.

Ttom, I do see it, and I don't always agree with blocking things that are are rediculous. This is one of them .
I attend local meetings and voice my opinion about expenditures for anything local officials dream-up.

How do we come up with 26 Billion to pay for it?! More billions that we don't have. If we're driving business out of this country, and we're not manufacturing anything to sell to other countries, then we must be borrowing some more money from China to pass along to our states to "create" government jobs and hack projects will NOT STIMULATE the economy.
And the dems think this is going to help them in Nov. What total idiots. More payoffs for public service UNIONS. Yeah, the private sector tax payers really love this. NOT
Obama's favorite benficiaries (The union workers) get a big boost, while the food stamp program gets cut by 11.9 billion dollars. At a time when we see more and more stories about americans going to bed hungry. That's what Obama means when he flaps his gums and says, "we are saving jobs!" It is comforting to know that the dems feel that saving union jobs is more important, than any other jobs! EVERY single stinkin' ONE!

Public employees get COLA raises like clockwork every year. Municipal employees are insulated from economic shocks like this one because they feast off of property tax assessments.
ILLinois is a classic example. Cook County and City of Chicago (Daley Dictator's town) keep raising property taxes in spite of declining property values. Their excuse? Just don't reassess annually while values are declining like other states.
Local police and fire officials DO perform needed services...BUT there is no reason why they should be receiving pensions (defined benefit plans) when they could be contributing to 401k programs (defined contribution plans) like the rest of us in the private sector and assuming the risk of funding their retirement instead of foisting that risk onto the taxpayer.
As bad as that is, the worst culprits are the public school systems which eat up 70% of a property tax bill, on average. Why can't folks pay for their kids educations instead of making others do it? It is not my responsibility to pay for your kid getting educated...especially when he/she is being taught by liberal teachers that the USA is at fault for 9/11, God is bad but Allah is good, socialism is fair and capitalism isn't, yadda yadda yadda.
I used to live in a Chicago suburb of $500-$700k homes in the '90s...people had Lexus and minivans in their driveways and mortgage payments of $2500-$3000 a month...yet they were too damn cheap to send their kids to private schools. Property taxes were and still are outrageous. I voted with my feet and sold out and left. Good riddance.

Judging by some of the comments on this thread it appears that America is having the same Public vs private sector divide that is occuring here in Ireland, In Ireland people on permanent contracts in the public sector have guaranteed jobs for life only people on temporary or fixed terms contracts can be made redundant. In Ireland there were pay cuts introduced in January 2010 of between 5-15% depending on slaray, also in early 2009 public sector workers were also required to pay an increased amount of their salaries into their guaranteed pensions, between 5-9.8% depending on salary.
A couple of questions here for people:
1) Do public sector workers in America have guaranteed jobs for life?
2) Is it true that the vast majority of public sector workers in the US are on very favourable defined benefit pension schemes as compared to defined contribution pension schemes in the private sector?
