The ghost of the Idiot Allende, the totally incompetent pie in the sky poster child for the left wing comes back to haunt us.
Mistake #1 - allienating the working class.
#2 - nationalizing industry and allienating foriegn investors, the upper class and, soon as the jobs went south, the working class.
#3 - allienating the military.
Now, what more could this guy have done to screw himself? Shoot, he had less than 36% of of the vote with two large blocks occupying 33 and 31% respectively so let's not mince words here - as his popularity went south, the popularity of his opponents went north so, to accuse the CIA of ousting him is crap. he was going with or without the industrial elite and the military's help.
scriobhneoir: I thought I'd start this thread for all the victims of that murderous thug Pinochet, who was eased into power by the CIA 38 years ago today.

Very well said, Allende would have turned Chile into another Cuba, Pincohet was no fascist, the economic policies of the Chicago Boys in the cabinet were completely incompatible with fascist ideology. Pinochet was a conservative Chilean patriot who was pro-US and allied to the Catholic church. Fascism is also anti religion so how could one possibly describe Pinochet as a fascist.

Well, we've got the Green Party holding the balance of power and screwing us all with 3% of the vote! Really alienating us all including the working class, foreign investors and destroying jobs and fortunately the military are pretty small so pissing them off is hardly going to hurt.
Could somebody phone Langley for us? Oh and frankly, I'd sooner have lived under Castro in Cuba than Pinochet in Chile!

jimbo79: pinochet was no patriot, he was responsible for the murders of thousands of innocent people
The murders of innocent people were indefensible and pinochet should have been jailed for those crimes, no dispute about that.
However, one can't deny the significant economic progress that was made when Pinochet was in power, when Chile started to implement free market economic reforms from 1976 onwards Chile became a less repressive society.
