gozoman2: ...so....a recycle geek huh?

...cool...have a look at this then....a recycled old farmhouse...all external walls and garden is recycled stone from the digging....all doors and windows are reused old ones....most of the partitioning...furniture...elevated bed...external furniture...kitchen is made of recycled pallet wood....as is most of the internal decor....90% of this place is recylced....

...also...hot water is supplied via solar heater...and all rain water is collected in a reservoir for reuse....

...have done three of those in the last five years....

...ain't got no hen so far though....

Desertguy49: Wood heat is great, I used to heat my old house entirley with wood, it doesn't usually get much colder than 30 F at night down here in the desert so really no need to waste money running central heat, I've got one that I need to install here before I get tied up with my new job...good luck with all those decisions Chris.

...Gotta agree....run my heating via stove too...runs on cut up pallets people throw out.....pretty confy...

peace

Looks wonderful.

Is it pricey to stay? Could you message me privately with info please. I´m thinking of taking my parents for a break, perhaps over Christmas, or maybe Spring. I also have to look into how easy or cheap it is to fly from Spain rather than the UK. I suspect it´s cheaper from the UK.

...being a small island in the Med means we never really have temperatures that go below a minimum of 12/14 C in the night.....cause the sea around us never goes down further then that....

wink

...except the occasional few days in Jan/Feb where the north chill wind gives temp of 5/8 C...but that is a rarity and for a few days at a time....never snows....and in general pretty sunny....

...the house in the vid has a wood burning stove installed with piping going trough the bedrooms....so pretty effectively centrally heated kind of....except you gotta keep feeding the stove...

water is piped via mains as is the entire island....but showers and toilets are now gonna be piped to take water from the reservoirs....rainwater collected from the same houses.....cutting down on mains consumption which is pretty expensive....

hey Con....we did not install any air conditioners at all....the construction of these old farmhouses has a natural manner of self ventilation and over mtr. thick walls....highly insulted from the winter chill and summer heat....

..all they need in summer is certain windows open.....shaded windows facing South...and a fans to keep the air circulating internally....and you're fine.....

If you don't have to deal with too much humidity, using an evaporative cooler or as we call em swamp cooler saves a lot of money as opposed to using AC. They can also be run off of solar panels.

I would think that a solid fuel stove could possibly be the best solution for you.

They are much more efficient than open fires since they utilize a good 80% of hear given off by the stove itself and the metal piping chimney absorbing the heat and letting out in the house itself....fire places have a 25/30% efficiency and most of the heat just runs out of the chimney.....

...if wood supply is good in the area then wood be best.....otherwise there are now stoves on the EU market which run on pellets...compressed wood chip which is placed in a container making part of the stove and is slowly and continuously dropped automatically in the fire chamber....

...you should be able to find on the internet...if not mistaken they are being produced either in Germany or Switzerland.....but saw them being advertised on Italian TV.....the pallets come in 25Kg bags ready for use....

...hope it can be of help...

Solar power usually works best in areas where the sun shines a lot, although the newer systems have been greatly improved over the years. The biggest issue is the initial cost of installation unless you are capable of doing the work yourself. It may take some time to realize the return on your initial investment. I'm not familiar with the climate or weather patterns in Bulgaria, but they have to get some pretty cold winters there. I'm not too sure as to whether it would be worth the investment it or not. Do some research on the web, there's lots of info on it that will give you all the pros and cons.
