This thread certainly has evolved into a most interesting and informative discussian. BTW gozoman, if Jan rents your place I want a piece of the action.
Speaking of pellet stoves, in the midwest corn belt they actually burn corn in supplimental heaters. Hard for a lot of people not from that area to believe but when you have no trees to speak of and tons of corn..... I imagine with the price of corn going up it's going to put a damper, pun intended, on that practice.

gozoman2: I would think that a solid fuel stove could possibly be the best solution for you.
They are much more efficient than open fires since they utilize a good 80% of hear given off by the stove itself and the metal piping chimney absorbing the heat and letting out in the house itself....fire places have a 25/30% efficiency and most of the heat just runs out of the chimney.....
...if wood supply is good in the area then wood be best.....otherwise there are now stoves on the EU market which run on pellets...compressed wood chip which is placed in a container making part of the stove and is slowly and continuously dropped automatically in the fire chamber....
...you should be able to find on the internet...if not mistaken they are being produced either in Germany or Switzerland.....but saw them being advertised on Italian TV.....the pallets come in 25Kg bags ready for use....
...hope it can be of help...
pellet ovens are great..ok granted they are not cheap..but burn and heat very efficiently...Germany and Austria make good ones
would not go for solar yet ..they are working on a new panel at the Frauendorfer institue which will actually be able to use over 40% of the sun rays to convert to energy..different colour waves ..what ever that is called in the US they are also working on one...but it will be at least 5 to 6 more years before it will be on the market
