I rang my local chemist to get a price on a prescription for one months supply of tablets. They told me 50 euro. I rang a chemist in Belleek(which is less than ten mins away) and the same tablets would cost me £8.52 which is about 9.70 in Euro. The generic brand would cost me £4 in Belleek, I dont know if they do generic brand locally, they never seem to offer them and I have asked Doctors about generic brands before and been fobbed off my them. Thank God that I rarely ever have to use prescribed medication but if I do again I will most certainly be filling them in Northern Ireland.

I had a prescription that was going to cost just shy of 50 euro. Ended up paying 19 euro in Derrylin. Exact same brand.
I dont know how they can justify it, it is not one or two euro. 40 euro of a difference is just too much of a difference in my opinion. We are lucky that we live close enough to the border to be able to get our "drugs" there lol
saoirse65: Yeah....will you organize a "drug" trip to Derry for us
Be careful how you word that, little thing called the RAAD up here, kinda visit yeh with black masks and guns LEGAL MEDICATION SHE MEANS HONEST. Oh cheap alcohol up here also, I shall fill me boot next meet. and you will be seeing these after the drugs
Mary Harney needs to get tougher with the manufacturers re basic cost price... not that Id ever excuse her on anything....but she may be thinking about the number of jobs these companies supply here.......the hse are still draggin their heels on generics...if the precription is written up for the drug NAME NOT brand, chemists are free to supply the cheapest alternative, if there is one...but if a doctor wrties up a BRAND, chemists are not legally allowed to substitute, off their own bat.

Yeah, in the States even if the brand name was written by the doctor unless "DAW" (Dispense As Written) was actully on the prescription the chemist could by law give you the generic brand if you wanted. That is what it was like when I lived in NY anyway.
