John Hume did something the others failed to do; he and Trimble brought comparative peace to our country.

GalwayGuy35: how in the name of god can you say collins was a brit. he was in a country ruled by the brits but he definately wasnt british

You're missing the point Jimbo was making. His point was that by the laws of the day Collins was considered a British citizen the same as Connolly.

Besides Connolly was more Irish than most of our soccer team.

Joyce was on the original list as was Wilde, Pearse, Yeats (I think)and Joyce. They just didn't make the last 5.

They're not really. An odd isolated incident that's all.

No more so than David Ervine, Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness, Billy Hutchinson, Albert Reynolds,Mo Mowlam,Fr Alec Reid, Gusty Spence, Sean Garland, and a host of others too numerous to mention. It was called the peace process for a reason, no 2 people could bring it about. Hume merely had the cop on to realise that the provos and loyalists had to be brought into the talks in order to make them worth.

As for Trimble, well he did more harm than good for most of his time as leader. Marching hand in hand down the Garvaghy road with Ian Paisley.

Losty: Not one of the candidates can be even considered our greatest people and while debate as to who is or isn;t has a certain of concentric talk about it; the names for this series ring in as little more than a popularity contest. Bono comes over to many as a self obsessed singer; Robinson turned over some laws but as a Senior Counsel that was her job to do as such while Collins was no more important than others of his time. Of the rest Hume would get my vote or perhaps Connolly but again they were one of several of their doings alongside others who could be also argued for.

However, I like Hem would value many others contribution to Irish society as much and more; from Dr. Tom Barnado to Jim Larkin, Benjamin and Arthur Guinness II, Sister Stanislaus Kenneddy, Willie Bermingham and Fr Peter McVerry, CS Parnell, TJ Whitaker, WB Yeats, Alfie Byrne etc etc, the list could go on but there are many more selfless people out there that deserve accolade and respect from us all.

You raise some very good points here. These lists are just a test of who people have heard of more than anything else.

Agree with you on the many other names that could be mentioned. A show like that is more about being fodder for tea breaks and pubs than it is about honouring people but it does little harm.

Except making Bono even more big headedlaugh

Yeah it was an interesting experiment, nothing more. Although I did find it funny the way Joe Duffy spent half of the show on Connolly talking about his own family. laugh
