True, it just annoys me how much of a cult hero Collins has become, when in reality he didn't do all that much. Tom Barry was in battle with his men in the most pivotal events of the tan war, while Collins was wining and dining and sending out young fellas to do his dirty work for him.

Have to say John Hume deserved every vote he got. Might go some small way to making up for the way he was shoved to one side at the end game especially after all he had done down the years to get them there. It took outsiders to recognise him up to now in awarding the peace prize.

scriobhneoir: A few hours until we hear who 'Ireland's greatest is. I'm backing James Connolly but all I can say is anyone but Bono. Please spare us from that fate.

I agree, anyone but Bono

scriobhneoir: Very good post. I don't agree with you on the hype about Bono though because all the media hype about him is on the positive side. To believe the media you'd think he could walk on water.

Cheers scriobhneoir,
Well you kind of are agreeing with me. ha ha
Hype is hype....be it negative or positve. i just dont trust the mainstream media..handshake

Was DeValera one of the nominated 7, I hope not. Even though I'm a former FF member that man absolutely destroyed the Irish economy in the 1930's.

Not one of the candidates can be even considered our greatest people and while debate as to who is or isn;t has a certain of concentric talk about it; the names for this series ring in as little more than a popularity contest. Bono comes over to many as a self obsessed singer; Robinson turned over some laws but as a Senior Counsel that was her job to do as such while Collins was no more important than others of his time. Of the rest Hume would get my vote or perhaps Connolly but again they were one of several of their doings alongside others who could be also argued for.

However, I like Hem would value many others contribution to Irish society as much and more; from Dr. Tom Barnado to Jim Larkin, Benjamin and Arthur Guinness II, Sister Stanislaus Kenneddy, Willie Bermingham and Fr Peter McVerry, CS Parnell, TJ Whitaker, WB Yeats, Alfie Byrne etc etc, the list could go on but there are many more selfless people out there that deserve accolade and respect from us all.

scriobhneoir: Okay of the 5 finalists this would have been my order.

1. James Connolly. No words can adequately describe the brilliance of this man. How we need his kind today. None of the other 4 should even have been mentioned in the same breath as him in my view.

2. Mary Robinson. Very little you can criticise this woman for. Not only did she do something to modernise this country but she also stood up to the Bush Administration while at the UN.

3. John Hume. An inoffensive kind of character who you couldn't fault much really

4. The most overrated man in Irish history. He sent out young fellas to do his dirty work for him. He made a contribution, but let's face it, he was no Tom Barry.

5. Bono, a truly hideous creature. Insincere, self serving. I suppose it never dawned on him that Ireland would have more money for oversees aid if he paid his taxes? It's a disgrace he got in the top 100, it's mind boggling that he made the top 5.

I have to agree....But wasn't James Connolly A Scotsman ????, as much as he deserves to win, he hardly qualifies

scriobhneoir: Be careful with the spelling, you've just nominated a man convicted of denying the holocaust instead of the deceased former PUP leader that you presumably meant.

No! the holocaust denier is Irving not Irvine!

Only due to the fact that the Brits still had power over Ireland at that point....Collins was an Irishman, Connolly was a Scotsman

Perhaps thats why the Saltire is flown so much throughout Ireland, and there has always been a rapport between us Irish and the Scots
