LadyinDublin: as i said on the thread in the other forum, im glad the opinions on this site arent used to judge wether to legalise it or not. with alcohol and tobacco why do we need a third drug on the market? do you want your children buying it as easy as they can buy alcohol underage? personally, i wouldnt trust someone to work for or with me if they were known to smoke it. ill make the same points as the other thread. what about the butcher (memory impaired) forgets to wash his/her hands? if you legalise this, people cant get jobs as smokers. and i dont see why they should be called stoners and not junkies. i no plenty who have smoked it. someone who is smoking it regular should be aable to be called a junkie, like someone who injects regular (althought they are far less of a risk to others). to those that say pot isnt the gateway to harder drugs, remember heroin (and morphine since they are very similar) come from the opium poppy, so it is also a natural product but we do not see campaigns to legalise it.

I'd much rather work next to someone that smoked a joint the night before, than drank a bottle of whiskey. roll eyes

Where do you draw the conclusion that pot is a gateway drug because heroin and morphine are created from a poppy?confused

They're hardly a natural product, they're a highly refined drug from a plant base, and so are many pharmaceuticals. Are pills your doctor prescribes a natural product as well?laugh

Personally, I don't smoke it, but I hate to see the misinformation spread by people that don't have a freaking clue at all! doh

In response to: Legalize it then tax it in relative terms to alcohol
ie
High strength:Skunk Vs Spirits higher tax
Normal strenght: non skunk vs Beer lower

Then raise drinking age to 21 years of age and legalise cannabis to 21 years of age also.
Instead of demolishing closed pubs reopen them as smoking houses for patrons of cannabis.

again this is your opinion and my are entitled to it. my right to reply would be that I would not work with someone under any substance influence full stop, if your working then professionalism is called for, what you do in your free time is your own business. As for calling pot smokers junkies that is just offensive and I find this a pity as I believe your point can be made without such name calling. In my experience I would rather my children have a weekend in Amsterdam then a weekend binge drinking once they are over the age of 21. As it stands I cant stop my children when they reach the age of 18 from drinking and I think this is a shame and alcohol does far more damage. please READ hyperlink article. In relation to the link you provided, you are referring to a report from 2007 as if it's a carte blanche finding of any drug or substance being deemed safe or otherwise. The findings of the report led by Professor David Nutt do not claim that use of certain drugs are in any way safe if misused, it is a rough rating system of substances based on how people use or misuse them and possible affects from same.

He is strong to point out that the availability of alcohol is a prime reason as to why it is listed as the most dangerous substance, something that is worth bearing in mind in the debate to open up access to other substances. I include a link below with some more information on same.

There are quite a lot of countries where weed is legal or at least decriminalised. Ireland would never legalise it in the short term but maybe some day we'll have a government with enough foresight to change the law.

Canabis is no more a gateway drug than alcohol. Actually it is an alcohol. The active ingredient in canabis is THC, or Tetra-Hyrdo-Cannabinol - the "ol" at the end defines it's chemical functional group (which in alcohols is an OH-).

I'm completely opposed to the war on drugs, it is unwinnable plain and simple, I consider smoking a joint or taking a line of cocaine to be just as socially acceptable as having a pint of beer, why should adults who sell drugs onto fellow adults be considered criminals.

Also look at Mexico there have been 28,000 deaths in a completely failed war on drugs since 2006, when governments try to regulate people's personal habits lawlessness usually results.

Does anyone hear on this thread actually think that the prohibition on drugs has worked?

They're closing down because you can't smoke tabocco in the head shops, not because of the pot issue. Anyway adults should be able to make moral decissions about their lives, that don't effect others, all on their own

I reckon in about 100 years time future generations will be laughing their heads off at governments from the early 21st century that tried to enforce a completely unwinnable war on drugs. I see California is having a referendum on legalising the weed tomorrow, even a right winger like myself supports the legalisation of cannabis.
