Sure, I've got an artificial one myself. I remember driving by a Christmas tree lot last year and after the season had passed there were still many trees that had been cut that were simply still laying there - never used. Sad really.
Reminds me of one of my favorite Christmas stories - The Crooked Little Christmas Tree. It was a tree that sheltered a dove and its spine curved so it wasn't suitable to be cut down. It was a sad little lonely tree, until one day, people came and replanted it into their back yard. There it enjoyed a happier life surrounded by other trees and birds ... and it enjoyed the joy of having the dove return and the resulting family that it got to share its love with.

Just a thought about cutting down Xmas trees. I think in many cases, here in the UK anyway, they are cultivated specially for the Xmas Tree market so they wouldn't exist otherwise. At least we get a bit of extra oxyen out of them during their short lifes ...

Recycle recycle, and no plastic bags .. always the reuseable cotton ones when you're shopping
Save water wherever you can and use it on the garden
Homemade cleaning products, ie white vinegar, epsom salts, borax for roaches (mixed with cloves) and non-toxic weed killer for the garden (white vinegar, salt and dishwashing liquid) .. lots and lots of ideas if you google "homemade" for the situation you want to address.
Minimize the purchase of packaged foods, make your meals from scratch .. it's healthier, far far cheaper and much less waste as far as packaging is involved

So in a way, it really isn't depleting the earth, because they were planted specifically for Christmas, but what if they had to plant one tree for every Christmas tree, and left it to grow ?
