Conrad73: You need the Men to put a Fighting Force together, not running an Insane asylum,so a Voluntary Force is the answer, not a Chaingang!
I do think that military service would be a great option for first time offenders of non-violent crimes. Would be a great place for them to learn some discipline outside of the penal system.
craig63: I agree national service or the draft should be compulsary for ALL.
Not necessarily the Draft, but certainly National Service..it will make men and women out of the youth of today that will benefit them later in life. There was a pilot progranme in th UK, in which they took young offenders and placed them in 1940's National Service Boot camps..the result was astounding as these young lads fought every step of the way with authority, yet the outcome was very positive for those who followed it through to the end. Youth today are lacking in affirmative authority as we have shifted to far from the disciplinary culture we had in the past..time for that pendulum to swing to the centre

craig63: my friend it was a great time and a great life wasnt it, if only I could turn the clock back i would sign that paper again and keep signing it.
Wow_Factor: A resounding YES! It teaches kids discipline and to work as a team. It makes them mature and gives them skills they can use when they get a job afterwards.

I dont think it will be long before they do that anyway and in one way Im not against them having some kind of structure but I am against the dehumanisation which Ive seen in some soldiers.....
trish123: It has to be a no from me - I know the pain of losing a child and dont want to ever think of any mother/father/sibling/loved one having to endure such pain - if people want to bomb each other put them on an island away from civilised people..... if they didnt have people to poke sticks at each other cos the politicians say so then there would be a lot less sons and daughters getting taken home in cold hard boxes.....
I can fully understand your view and am very sorry for your loss, but honestly it does teach you respect and discipline which must make you a better person.

I have respect and discipline already so do my children and the people I associate with - none of us would do the bidding of corrupt governments though, thus is our integrity.....
Do you really want a nation of children who think like this;
"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it -- for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

I cannot either understand or comprehand what you must have gone through..there is nothing worse than loosing a child, particulary in such a way
The sad reality is that there will be a war..somewhere in the world, such is the nature of man....
When it comes to National Service..my partner, as you know is German, had to do National Service.Today he says it was the making of him, it brought discpline whenhe had none, it brought him rountine in a chaotic world it brought a new confidence in hid abilities when he went into the world..surely that's not a negative expereince

And discipline etc are good qualities but its rubbish to suggest this can only be achieved from 'a spell in the army'

Very awesome Trish...Would rather not say which line, but there was one that definitely spoke to how I viewed my service in the military and in a sense still do.. Great song though
tomcatwarne: If it's neccesary, to defend you and your children.
It isnt though - thats just what the politicians would have you believe and we all know they have fingers in many pies.... anyway, its a bit of a moot point, the british gvmt cant even equip the troops they already have........

Your children are luckky that you have been able to bring that to them as a parent..there are so many youth today who do not have that leader within their family. Hence the concept/idea of National Service may be an option for those who dont..
As I grow older, I am more aware of the youth who are disenfranchised..they have no grounding in life..they are adrift in a world that is not tolerant to their difficulties..they dont even know that they have no tether to another...a lot have only expereinced chaos when in turn creates a trouble youth to find answers that may not necessarily be the right ones...

hi trish, i dont want to disrespect you in any way because of your loss I can fully understand your views and opinons. But the sad fact is that not all parents teach their children respect and discipline like you obviously do and that is something you do learn in the armed forces and has 100% made me a better person.
