Just heard on Vincent Browne that Bono, who was recently part of an RTE poll for the greatest ever Irishman, has taken all his money and moved to Holland!

Obviously, charity or even support, doesn't begin at home inspite of all the tax allowances we made for him and his ilk! Saint Bono is as greedy as the rest....or does he know something we don't....or does he just not want to pay his part of the bank bail out?

Thoughts please?

very mad

But his tax base has been moved from Ireland to Holland. You have to register somewhere for tax. This used to force all the UK pop stars to move to the US as they were at one point paying 85% tax!

In fairness, I can understand anyone, even the very rich, wanting to avoid 85% tax( ?? !) but surely making it that high and therefore encouraging them take ALL their tax revenue out of the country , is a little backward?? ( I have absolutely no knowledge of the tax laws,so I am assuming the current laws means that Ireland gets no taxes from them now?)I'm sure you will correct me if ( far from the first time laugh ) I am wrong!!

No problem asking ordinary folk to give and I have no doubt he gives some of his money to charity But byes greed applies to bono as well. U2 make good music but he should stay out of politics.

Didn't artists/painters/musicians etc get some very good tax incentives for many years?. I remember many years ago in Shannon Co Clare companies being given 10 years tax free and as soon as that expired they all pulled out of Ireland.

Oh the 85% was before Thatcher. The one thing I liked was she did away with supertax so Elton John, David Bowie and the rest moved back to the UK and I would say that 85% was sheer left wing lunacy!

But in Ireland, the rich pay very little tax and Bono would be classed as an artist which would give him a huge tax allowance. Bertie Ahern used the same tax law so he didn't have to pay tax on his auto biography.

Having said that, the rich haven't been asked to pay that much of the bailout so I'm guessing that the smart money still expects the Irish ecconomy to collapse. Capital is pouring out of the banks faster than the ECB can put it in, which explains why we're having to use our own pension fund to keep the banks afloat rather than the IMF money! That and government ministers repeatedly telling us that our deposits are safe rather than answering the questions they're asked!

If Finton O'Toole or David McWilliams leave, I'd say that signals the end.

I can, to a certain extent, understand the artist tax deal, but are there limits?- I have surfed the net to try to get info on exactly what the tax exemption is for artists in Ireland, but can;'t seem to get real info- i can see a struggling artist trying to get their business going, getting a break, but does that extend to those that are very successful?
if you are making €2 million a year, do you really need a tax break on the first 50 or 60 K?? most of us would be happy to make that at all, never mind tax free?? As I say- I can't find real numbers, so maybe I am completely off base, but I do seem to recall something in the news about Bertie coming under the 'artist' tax free bracket for his book??dunno

thanks- but does that mean that eg a writer, is completely exempt from tax regardless of how much they make?? I thought it was only for the first €xxxx of their income?? that surely proves my point?
